"Lots of guys really confirmed the idea that I already had... that I was undesirable."From: NewNowNext
Being overweight in the gay community can mean facing discrimination and body-shaming on a daily basis.
In the Davey Wavey-produced video below, magazine editor Martijn opens up about his experience as a larger gay guy, sharing that his journey to self-acceptance started with a heartbreaking (and all-too-common) struggle.
“One guy sent a message to me saying, ’Look at your profile picture, then look at my profile picture again, and then decide if you really think it was a good idea to send me a message,'” he recounts.
Martijn says getting messages from strangers telling him how “ugly” he was convinced him being overweight meant he would never truly be happy.
But discovering a community of “chasers” finally made him feel desirable.
“Maybe two or three years ago was the first time when I looked in the mirror and actually thought, ’Oh, you actually look kind of hot today,'” he said.
He still gets insecure in gay bars from time to time, but Martijn says ultimately he’s accepted that he has nothing to be ashamed of.
