Angie Reno
Hyperkinetic switchfooter from the San Fernando Valley, northeast of Los Angeles. A 1968 issue of Surfing magazine noted that the 15-year-old Reno “surfs like a young Dewey Weber, always on the go, climbing and dropping, and driving hard on every move.” Reno was the surprise winner of the Malibu Club Invitational competition that year, and was featured in three of the most popular surf films of the early ’70s: Pacific Vibrations (1970), Five Summer Stories (1972), and Going Surfin’ (1973).
On the North Shore, he earned a reputation for riding huge surf; at Pipeline he liked to paddle out beyond the pack, roll in from Second Reef, then switch stance before the wave went vertical on First Reef.
Reno stunt-surfed in Warner Brothers’ 1978 movie Big Wednesday, and was buffed yet coy for his photo spread in the June 1974 issue of Playgirl, which included a shot of him surfing nude at Hawaii’s Velzyland. He later worked as a Hollywood stuntman.
