"It's not only good for the Tinder community, but it's the right thing to do for the world."From: NewNowNext
Tinder CEO Sean Rad made the announcement last Thursday at Vox Media’s Code Conference. Currently, the app only offers users the option to identify themselves (and people they’re interested in) as “male” or “female,” which Rad believes does a disservice to the app’s diverse user base.
“For a long time we haven’t done enough to give [transgender people] a good experience,” Rad said. “It’s harder for them to get what they are looking for. We have to modify our experience to address that.”
“It’s not only good for the Tinder community,” he added, “but it’s the right thing to do for the world.”
To make these changes, Rad (pictured right) and his team of designers have enlisted the help of LGBT experts (including activist Andrea James and members of GLAAD) to ensure that the transition is fully informed about the needs of this “important demographic.” Though Rad didn’t go further into the specifics of what these changes would look like exactly, he estimates that they’ll be ready to roll out in about two months.
The move is an important one as Tinder is one of the most popular dating apps in the world, with approximately 50 million users across the globe signed on at any time. The company follows in the footsteps of cyber giants Facebook and OkCupid, both of whom have expanded their gender options to include a vast array of inclusive choices for their customers.
