The critically acclaimed HBO series Six Feet Under premiered 15 years, on June 3, 2001.
The dark comedy followed the Fisher Family as they dealt with daily deaths while running their family funeral home in Los Angeles. The series was created by Alan Ball after his first feature film, American Beauty.
The adult siblings in the family were the focus of the series. Peter Krause played Nate, and Lauren Ambrose as Claire, but it was Michael C. Hall’s reserved and realistic portrayal of the gay brother, David that really struck a chord with LGBT audiences.
Ball attended this year’s Tribeca Film Festival where he did a live commentary of the series finale. He spoke about the relationship between David and his boyfriend, Keith (Matthew St. Patrick) that ran throughout the series:
“I didn’t want David and Keith to be the gay characters,” Ball said at the screening. “I just wanted them to be characters. And actually, one of the notes I got from HBO after the first season was, ‘We need to make Nate and Brenda [Rachel Griffiths] as sexy as David and Keith are.’ I was like, ‘Oh, okay.’”
The series ran for five season and won multiple awards including Emmys and a Golden Globe for Best Drama. Time Magazine named it one of the 100 Best TV Shows of All Time, and many regard the final episode as the best series finale ever.
