Out actor Russell Tovey is joining the cast of ABC’s Quantico next season, as a gay character written especially for him by out show runner Joshua Safran.
“Ever since being introduced to him in The History Boys 10 years ago, I’ve hoped to work with Russell,” Safran tells The Hollywood Reporter.
“It’s been an honor for the writers and myself to be able to create this role specifically for him.”
Tovey will play Harry Doyle, described as “a mischievous gadabout” by THR.
“Part Thomas Crown, part grown-up Artful Dodger, the mysterious Harry can be anything to anybody—and is just as likely to seduce your husband as he is to pick his pocket when it’s over.”
Quantico doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to gay characters: Last season it turned out one FBI recruit was only pretending to be gay, and another actually was gay—but also a psychopath who framed an innocent man for a terrorist attack and then committed suicide rather than face the music.
Hopefully Tovey’s character will be slightly less despicable.
Quantico will mark his second American series after HBO’s Looking, which will wrap up with a TV movie on July 23.
