A rare 1979 interview with Jodie Foster is recirculating on Tumblr, and watching it just might make you feel better about the progress we’ve made in the 37 years since.
In it, Dallas-area reporter Bobbie Wygant asks a 17-year-old Foster, “What kind of fella would you like?”
Jodie wasn’t out at the time, of course, but her reaction tells us everything we need to know:
“I suppose I would like somebody who knows my business,” she said.
Asked if she had “a steady boyfriend,” Jodie laughed and said “No, I don’t have time. I suppose I don’t think about it much.”
Foster has lived a mostly private life away from the media’s peering eyes, and came out publicly in a 2013 Golden Globes acceptance speech.
“I have a sudden urge to say something that I’ve never been able to air in public,” she said at the time.
What a legend.
