Halloween often inspires people to push the limits of what’s PC, but a costume that was being sold by Walmart is just downright transphobic.
The retailer is selling something called the “Tranny Granny Costume” to adult men on its website via the third-party Wholesale Costume and Party Supplies.
There’s nothing intrinsically bad about the costume itself, which consists of a dress, head scarf and pads, but the name of the outfit unapologetically uses a transphobic slur as a joke.
Spirit Halloween stores, which came under attack last year for carrying “Call Me Caitlyn” costumes based on Jenner’s iconic Vanity Fair cover, reportedly were also selling the offensive granny outfit at the time as well.
This year, however, they are selling the same set, but they’ve retitled it “Adult Granny Costume.”
Update:
Clicking the link to Walmart’s transphobic costume leads to an error page that reads, “Sorry, we’re having technical difficulties and looking into the problem now,” so the retail giant may be rethinking its decision to package the item in such a way.
