STICKY AND SWEET. HARD BOILED AND LONG LASTING. FIZZY AND SOUR. AS EVERY CHILD IN THE WORLD IS BORN, SO IS A LOVE OF ALL THINGS SWEET. NICE AND YET NAUGHTY AT THE SAME TIME. TASTY AND TEMPTING. GAZING THROUGH THE WINDOW OF A SWEET SHOP, EYEING TREATS OF EVERY TASTE, TEXTURE AND SIZE, MOUTH WATERING AND ENTICING. SO NOW, AS GROWN UPS, OUR LOVE OF SWEET THINGS HASN’T GONE AWAY, BUT IT HAS CHANGED SLIGHTLY… GUY CANDY ANYONE?
Being gay and living in our modern times is like being a kid in a candy store all over again. Men of all shapes, sizes, colors and creed, appealing to every different taste, tempting us with kissable lips and toned bodies, teasing us with flirty looks and a hint of flesh. They are all out there. Waiting to be tasted. To be tried. And to taste and try themselves. They present us a feast for our senses. Smells, feelings, sights and tastes. So many. So different. It is almost an overdose for the ones that are true lovers of anything sweet, sticky or spicy.
The idea for Guy Candy came from Nige Rorbach’s love of sweets. Ever since he was a child, he has loved sweets! Ice cream, chocolate, candy, chewy sweets, he loves it all. What Nige set out to achieve with Guy Candy, is to create something colorful, fun and tempting, that could evoke those same responses. “I wanted to take my work, and my art, to a new level of pin up. At the same time, the play on words from “eye candy” to “guy candy” also appealed to me. I wanted this series to be attractive to the eye, and really sexy, and also to give a sense of “that must taste amazing” ! ha ha”
Nige Rorbach had already done a shot with James Cohen where he had a lollipop, and it was one of their favorite images. That was the trigger for Nige to expand the idea. A few people had questioned why he was using new models for such a different type of work to what he had done previously, rather than working with models he had worked with a lot. For Nige the answer and reasons were simple really. “I had already been discussing ideas with Andrew [Morrill]and Alexander [Hughes], for our first shoot, and I was really inspired by their passion, and interest. They seemed to be on the same page as me, in terms of the type of visuals and attitude that I wanted to create, and so it was so much easier to collaborate on ideas. When I spoke to them about my idea, both of them liked that it was a bit different, and that they’d both get to eat sweets on set ! ha ha. Alexander was also really into the idea of covering himself in chocolate sauce, which I’m sure you’ll agree looked really good on him ;)”
When it came to the shoots themselves, Nige had already searched for different types of confectionery and sweets, and he had a really good idea in his mind of how each shot would be set up. And so the fact that the guys were really into the concept just made it run really smoothly. Andrew said, “I love being able to play in front of the camera and really enjoy when a photograph gets creative with props. The shoot provided an opportunity to have fun with poses and expression, which is always a pleasure for a model. I love what we created in the end and hope that the sense of fun came through. And like Nige said, getting to eat the props when we were done was a nice bonus. They were delicious.”
For Nige Rorbach personally, this has been one of his most fun projects to do, and it was really exciting to see how his ideas were being translated so perfectly by the boys. May I add to that that even though we are all a bit older now, many of us still have a sweet tooth (come on, admit it) though in this particular case it seems hard to decide what to sink your teeth in first.
