CARL VANASSCHE!

THE CURBS OF THE BODY!
From:  KALTBLUT MAGAZINE
Carl Vanassche is an inspired photographer who loves clear lines and shapes. He creates strong and beautiful photographs using as little clothes as possible and plane backgrounds, so that the nude body and it’s natural lines prevail. Till now he’s had several exhibitions (November 2012 Barcelona in Gallery Antinous, December 2012 Amsterdam in Gallery Vrolijk, May 2013 Paris in Gallery Myriam Bouagal).
KALTBLUT: How easy is it to find guys who wanna pose for nude pictures?

Carl:  For me it is quiet easy to find guys who are willing to pose for nude and semi nude pictures. I find most of the models through my social network. Some people contact me because they have friends who posed for me or because they have seen photos made by me on Flickr or on my private webpage. When I meet people in the gym, in the street or at friend’s places I just ask them if they would be interested in posing for me. The fact that I already had several exhibitions helps a lot to built confidence or trust with the potential model. On the other hand it is extremely difficult to find female models. Most of the girls are very unhappy, uncomfortable or ashamed of their body appearance.
KALTBLUT: What does nudity mean to you?

Carl: I do love abstract and clear lines and for this kind of photography nudity is important because there is nothing to distract you, no bright colors of clothing, no pattern line of clothing, no jewels, watches and so on.
The only thing I see are lines, shapes and the curbs of the body. I’m thrilled when I see how the body adjust to dancing, yoga or simple muscular movements. If I see a fully dressed model I will get confused by the patterns and colors of the clothing. That is also one of the reason why I like to work with plain and neutral backgrounds.
KALTBLUT: Have you ever come across any difficulties and problems during a shoot? How did you handle it?

Carl:  I never really had big problems with my models. A few times the models arrived unannounced with a friend who wants to watch the shooting. I no longer accept this because often the model will be too aware of the friend who is watching and this creates a certain tension which will have a negative impact on the quality of the shooting. It is very important for me that the model feels relax and comfortable with my presence and the presence of the camera. During the session I always ask the models to tell me if I ask something they are not comfortable with and this of course helps to avoid problems during or after the shooting.

KALTBLUT: If you had to photograph a famous guy, which one would it be?

Carl:  If I would be photographing a famous guy I would choose Matthias Schoenaerts, he is a Flemish actor who has recently been photographed by Bruce Weber.
