Freeform’s bubbly sitcom Young & Hungry was back for a fourth season—and trans comedian Ian Harvie made an appearance.
In the episode, food blogger Gabi (Emily Osment) wins a cooking contest using her Aunt Chris’ classic recipe. But when organizers want to take a picture of Gabi and her aunt, she’s forced to hunt down someone she hasn’t seen in years.
It turns out the reason they’ve been out of contact is that Gabi’s relative has transitioned and is now her Uncle Chris.
Trans actors (and characters) have started making inroads on television, but usually in high-minded fare like Orange is the New Black. For a basic cable channel aimed at teens and families to include a trans male actor—and not use his presence as a punchline—is a. very. big. deal.
Freeform is owned by ABC, which has also put Harvie in a recurring role on Mistresses, where he gets caught up in the romantic life of boutique owner April (Rochelle Aytes).
Again, Mistresses is no Transparent (which Harvie appeared on, BTW), so it’s a real sign of progress.
