Sunday night’s must-see moment at the Golden Globes had to be Meryl Streep’s acceptance speech upon receiving the Cecille B DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award.
The actress used the time to call out Donald Trump’s impersonation of disabled reported Serge Kovaleski, who suffers a congenital joint condition:
'For the 100th time, I never "mocked" a disabled reporter (would never do that)' - Donald Trump, 09/01/17 pic.twitter.com/5t5Kg7PXsV— pooka (@madeofwasps) January 9, 2017
Since the speech aired, the world’s been waiting with bated breath for Trump’s reaction — which finally arrived at 6:27 a.m. Monday, in a rambling series of Tweets that are as ludicrous as you’ve come to expect:
Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a.....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 9, 2017
Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never "mocked" a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him.......— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 9, 2017
"groveling" when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 9, 2017
While Streep’s speech was largely celebrated and widely shared after airing Sunday night, there were still a handful of detractors like Meghan McCain and Laura Ingraham:
This Meryl Streep speech is why Trump won. And if people in Hollywood don't start recognizing why and how - you will help him get re-elected— Meghan McCain (@MeghanMcCain) January 9, 2017
Actress Meryl Streep uses her Lifetime Achievement Award speech to bash @realDonaldTrump. How imaginative! How creative!Yawn.— Laura Ingraham (@IngrahamAngle) January 9, 2017
You got to love watching leftist Hollywood actors who don't live in reality lecture us on politics. #GoldenGlobes #MerylStreep— Jack Murphy (@RealJack) January 9, 2017
Disappointed #MerylStreep turned her #lifetimeachievementaward into anti#Trump speech. Bad taste and disrespectful. Get over it Hollywood.— Victoria Gammer (@VGammer) January 9, 2017
Meanwhile, Twitter lit up with hundreds of people praising Streep’s speech:
"When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose" thank you #MerylStreep #GoldenGlobes— Julianne Moore (@_juliannemoore) January 9, 2017
If u didn't like/love #MerylStreep's speech tonite, u lack empathy: which is a nice way of saying you're not a decent person.#GoldenGlobes— Amy Siskind (@Amy_Siskind) January 9, 2017
We have a serious problem when someone encouraging us to be kind and empathetic is seen as a political statement. #GoldenGlobes #MerylStreep— J. Benson (@BenzHasFriends) January 9, 2017
Thank you Meryl Streep. Bravery, poise, eloquence, and speaking for many rather than just for herself, and for what is right. #GoldenGlobes— Tim Teeman (@TimTeeman) January 9, 2017
