A Major Character On NBC’s “Timeless” Was Just Revealed To Be Gay

It occurred during the series' winter finale.

The NBC sci-fi action adventures series Timeless involves—you guessed it, time travel—as a small team of agents are sent on a mission to stop a criminal from changing the past and rewriting critical moments in American history.

During last week’s winter finale, one of the main characters, Agent Denise Christopher (Sakina Jaffrey), was revealed to be gay when she had Lucy (Abigail Spencer) over to her house for dinner and introduced her to her wife and children.

Agent Christopher invited Lucy to meet her family so in case history is rewritten and her family is erased (long story, don’t ask) Lucy will know that they existed and can tell Christopher so they can try to correct history and bring them back.

Christopher’s sexuality reveal wasn’t dramatic and she never actually “came out” on the show, she just introduced her wife and talked about her family.

A fully formed LGBT character where their sexuality doesn’t define who they are (and isn’t revealed until ten episodes into the series) is refreshing after a year of so many dramatic story lines—and sometimes fatal outcomes—for LGBT characters.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Christopher—and whether she’s actually an ally or a villain—when Timeless returns to NBC in 2017.
