Since there are so many groovy plays, musicals, concerts and events, this is my monthly list to help promote a few of them (click on a title for more information or to purchase tickets):

October 4 - November 20 at Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia
Based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, this new musical is a hilarious, contemporary update of an American classic in which a mother and daughter experience each other’s lives first-hand, if only for a day. With a score by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composers of Next to Normal and If/Then, and a book by Parenthood’s Bridget Carpenter, Freaky Friday is a delightfully entertaining world premiere musical for anyone with a perfectly imperfect family.

Broadway previews begin October 8. Opens October 30 at the Booth Theatre.
Tony Award winners Liev Schreiber and Janet McTeer return to Broadway in one of the sexiest plays ever written. This revival of Christopher Hampton's 1985 play is a transfer of the critically acclaimed 2015 production from London's Donmar Warehouse.

October 9 at Chicago's Uptown Underground
After two sold-out performances earlier this year, Nancy Hays (as Judy Garland) and Michelle Lauto (as Liza Minnelli) are bringing back their cabaret show, which is a recreation of Judy and Liza's famed 1964 concert at the London Palladium. Their tribute features the classic songs, costumes, dialogue and dance steps to help the audience re-live this historic occasion, with solos like “The Man That Got Away”, “Just in Time” and “Gypsy in My Soul” and such memorable duets as “Chicago” and “Get Happy/Happy Days”.

October 14 at The Theatre at The Ace Hotel in Los Angeles
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Brian De Palma's horror classic, weSPARK Cancer Support Center, Ace Hotel and Scream Factory are hosting a cast and crew reunion and screening of the brand-new restoration of the film, paired with a 1970s prom-themed party. The reunion is set to include Carrie stars Piper Laurie, Nancy Allen (weSPARK's Executive Director), William Katt and P.J. Soles as well as editor Paul Hirsch and casting director Harriett B. Helberg. All proceeds will directly benefit weSPARK’s programs.

October 15 - 16 at Chicago's Music Box Theatre
Now in its 12th year, this 24-hour horror film marathon returns with the ultra-rare Director's Cut of Raw Meat (1972) and a new Restoration of the 1929 silent movie, Seven Footprints to Satan, with a live musical score. Other films include Popcorn (1991), Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982), Eye of the Cat (1969), Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), Doctor Butcher, M.D. (1980), Torso (1973), Street Trash (1987) and the newly rediscovered Eyes of Fire (1983).

October 18 - 21 at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater
The four-night event will feature tributes to Stephen Sondheim, Sylvia Sims and Sheldon Harnick and Charles Strouse. Scheduled performers include Karen Akers, Klea Blackhurst, Ann Hampton Callaway, Penny Fuller, Anita Gillette, Jeff Harnar, Andrea Marcovicci, Donna McKechnie, Marilyn Maye, Sally Mayes, Anthony Nunziata, Will Nunziata, Billy Stritch, KT Sullivan and Tom Wopat.

October 16 at the Park West Theater
CCP presents “Sentimental Journeys: Musical Tours of the Heart" with special honoree Joan Curto and performances by Anne Burnell, Mark Burnell, Cynthia Clarey, Barbara Lee Cohen, Jeff Dean, Elizabeth Doyle, David Edelfelt, Hilary Feldman, Cathy Glickman, Carla Gordon, Sophie Grimm, Scott Gryder, KT McCammond, Nan Mason, Tom Michael, Bob Moreen, Paul Motondo, Daryl Nitz, Suzanne Petri, Judy Rossignuolo–Rice, Johnny Rodgers, Denise Tomasello, Denise McGowan Tracy and Girls Like Us (Laura Freeman, Beckie Menzie and Marianne Murphy Orland).

Broadway previews begin October 18. Opens November 14 at the Imperial Theatre.

October 24 at NYC's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre
Tony nominee Marin Mazzie (Passion, Ragtime, The King and I) will be honored with the first Phyllis Newman Dame Award at the 20th anniversary benefit for The Actors Fund’s Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative. Directed by Bebe Neuwirth, Nothing Like a Dame will feature performances by Christine Ebersole, Melissa Errico, Julie Halston, Judy Kuhn, Tonya Pinkins, Karen Ziemba, Ali Stroker, Erin Hill, and Ava Briglia, Willow McCarthy and Aviva Winick from Broadway's Matilda the Musical.

Off-Broadway previews begin October 27. Opens November 17 at Classic Stage Company.
Academy Award winner Tom Schulman adapts his own screenplay for director John Doyle's much-anticipated production, which stars Jason Sudeikis as Professor John Keating.

Off-Broadway previews begin October 29. Opens November 16 at 59E59 Theaters.
Molly Ringwald stars as Aurora Greenway in the U.S. premiere of Dan Gordon's stage adaptation based on Larry McMurtry's 1975 novel and James L. Brooks' 1983 screenplay.
