May 7th is National Day to Prevent Teen & Unplanned Pregnancy

On May 7 The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy has organized the thirteenth annual National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. On this day, and throughout the month, teens are encouraged to visit StayTeen.org and take the National Day quiz, which offers pregnancy prevention messages and prepares them to make better decisions “in the moment.” Simply put, sex has consequences that teens need to be aware of.

Over the last 20 years teen pregnancy and birth rates in the United State have declined by 44 percent and 52 percent respectively and are now at record low levels. Despite this dramatic decrease, three in 10 girls will become pregnant by age 20, greatly reducing their chance of graduating high school on time. Among teen girls who have dropped out of high school, 30 percent cite pregnancy or parenthood as the reason, while 38% of teen girls who have a child before age 18 get a high school diploma by age 22.

The National Campaign and its nearly 200 partners will continue to spread awareness to young men and woman about the benefits of delaying parenthood until educational goals are achieved, and they are in a stable relationship. The National Day aims to help teens think more carefully about sex, relationships, contraception, the possibility of pregnancy, and the lifelong challenges of being a parent
