June 19th is World Sickle Cell Day

June 19th marks World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, which was created by the United Nations in 2006 to raise global awareness for sickle cell disease as a public health problem. In recognition of the date, Dr. Yutaka Niihara discusses the disease and treatment options in “Understanding Sickle Cell Disease,” as part of News-Medical.net’s MediKnowledge Series.
