Orlando Forced To Cancel Pride Weekend Due To Hurricane Matthew

Thousands were planning to travel to the event in order to honor the victims of the Pulse massacre.

 This weekend’s Orlando Pride celebration was supposed to be a glimmer of hope after a devastating year for the city’s LGBT community, but the celebration is experiencing a major setback because of Hurricane Matthew.

The storm has already ravaged parts of Haiti and is expected to hit Florida early Friday morning, making it nearly impossible for the planned festivities to move forward.

The event, which was expecting a huge turnout from people traveling to the city to pay tribute to the victims of the Pulse Nightclub attack, may now be postponed until November.

Organizers explained that, although the weather forecast for Saturday seemed favorable, the conditions on Thursday and Friday would make it difficult to set up for the event safely and would prevent many traveling vendors and entertainers from arriving at all.

“The safety of participants and attendees is our highest priority,” event workers said in a statement. “With so many in the community looking forward to uniting together at Pride, the Come Out With Pride board is committed to making the event happen at a later time in November.”
