Recently Unearthed 1964 Antigay Pamphlet Is The Most Homoerotic Thing Ever
From: Queerty
Just in time for Pride season, Miami New Times has uncovered a pamphlet published by Florida lawmakers in the January 1964 that somehow manages to be the most homophobic and homoerotic materials ever produced.
The pamphlet, “Homosexuality and Citizenship in Florida,” was written by the Florida Legislative Investigation Committee in response to the growing number of homosexuals reported in the state. Imagine, gay men flocking to sun and beaches!
However, the committee embarked on a gay witch hunt rather than conducting research. First, it went into Florida’s schools and fired nearly 40 professors and deans from Florida universities and revoked the licenses of over 70 public school teachers for being “suspected homosexuals.” Several students were also expelled for being gay.
After the mass exodus of gays from the school system, committee members wrote up a report, dubbed the “Purple Pamphlet” for its lavender cover, intended for “every individual concerned with the moral climate of the state.”
“Homosexuality is, and far too long has been, a skeleton in the closet of society,” the pamphlet begins, before spewing pages upon pages of homophobic nonsense.
But in between the antigay rants are smatterings of softcore gay porn images like this one:
And this one:
Which might have just more than a few people some fun ideas. The pamphlet also includes a “gay glossary” packed with slang terms used by the homosexuals. Some of the words include a “fairy,” who is defined as “interested only in sex with any man,” a “creep,” who is defined as “a homosexual or normal person who is disgusting to the average or normal gay person in all ways,” and a “piss elegant,” which is defined as “a homosexual who brags or is outwardly conceited.”
LOL. We can think of several people we could fit into each category today, and love them all.
If you ask us, the whole thing is the “dog’s lunch.” (“Either a normal person or a gay person whose looks and actions are unattractive to the point of non-association.”)

Pope Francis: Catholic Church Should Apologize To Gays
The Pope did not, however, move away from Catholic doctrine that gays are "intrinsically disordered.”
From: NewNowNext
From: NewNowNext
In an interview Sunday, Pope Francis said the Catholic Church should apologize to gay people for past persecution and discrimination.
“I believe that the church not only should apologize to the person who is gay whom it has offended,” the Pope said, “but has to apologize to the poor, to exploited women, to children exploited for labor; it has to ask forgiveness for having blessed many weapons.”
The Holy Father made his comments after German Cardinal Reinhard Marx said Friday that the Church should apologize for being “very negative” about the LGBT community.
“The history of homosexuals in our societies is very bad, because we’ve done a lot to marginalize [them],” said Marx.”As Church and society, we have to say ‘Sorry.’”
Marx also caused ripples in the Vatican by claiming the Church’s complete dismissal of same-sex relationships is harmful.
“You cannot say that a relationship between a man and a man and they are faithful [that] that is nothing, that has no worth.”
Pope Francis didn’t go that far, of course, and maintained the Church has the right to condemn certain behavior.
“One can condemn, not for ideological reasons, but for let’s say, political behavior—like certain protests that are too offensive to others and that are not related to the problem.”
He acknowledged that “some traditions and cultures that have a different mentality” and reiterated his comment “Who are we to judge?” which he first declared in 2013.
The comment is too little, too late, for some activists.
“Pope Francis’ comments about the church’s ‘past treatment’ of gays doesn’t acknowledge the harm being caused in present day. The harm LGBT people face from the church is ongoing,” said Eliel Cruz, executive director of Faith In America. “The church’s teachings on homosexuality as sinful is causing this harm.”
Fielding questions aboard the papal plane after a trip to Armenia, the Pope also discussed the genocide in that country, as well as the UK’s departure from the European Union and other issues.
There is something that is not working in that unwieldy union, but let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater,” he said of “Brexit.” “Let’s try to jump-start things, to recreate .. today the two key words for the EU are creativity and fecundity.”
Police Maintain YouTuber Calum McSwiggan Faked Gay-Bashing
Is social-media celebritydom getting out of hand?
From: NewNowNext
From: NewNowNext
On Monday, YouTuber Calum McSwiggen claimed he was violently gay-bashed while visiting Los Angeles.
But now police in West Hollywood are questioning the gay social influencer’s story, and have taken him into custody.
Last night was the worst night of my life and I’m really struggling to find the words to talk about it,” McSwiggan posted on Facebook.
“After one of the most wonderful weekends at VidCon we went out to a gay club to celebrate, and towards the end of the evening I was separated from my friends and beaten up by three guys.”
McSwiggan, who went to the Abbey with friends Sunday night, claims he was attacked after leaving the bar, some time around 2:30 a.m.
Police were called, but finding no visible injuries or witnesses, couldn’t confirm McSwiggan’s story.

“The authorities should have been there to help and protect me but instead they treated me like a second class citizen,” McSwiggan wrote on Facebook.
But when he began to vandalize a nearby car, the police arrested McSwiggan and put him in lockup. That’s when, authorities claim, he inflicted his injuries on himself.
After being booked and photographed, Mr. McSwiggan was placed into a cell by himself at West Hollywood Station. Mr. McSwiggan was then observed injuring himself with the handle and receiver to a payphone inside the cell.
Medical personnel were summoned and Mr. McSwiggan was transported to a local hospital for treatment.”
The British 26-year-old maintains he’s telling the truth and lashed out at the police.
“With three broken teeth and six stitches in my forehead, I’ve never felt so terrified to be a gay man in the public eye.”

McSwiggan, who has more than 62,000 subscribers, has used his YouTube channel to talk about LGBT issues and sex, discuss his history of depression and reveal he had appeared in a porn video.
Is this simply a misunderstanding? A scam? Or perhaps a sign that social-media-celebrity culture is getting out of hand?
Fellow YouTuber Riyadh Khalaf, who was reportedly with McSwiggan at the Abbey, has supported his claims. What his exact involvement in the situation is not clear.
Planting Peace Buys Home Next Door To Westboro Baptists, Paints It Colors Of The Trans Flag
Planting Peace already owned the rainbow-colored Equality House.
From: NewNowNext
From: NewNowNext
Planting Peace has been on the forefront of spreading equality and love in the face of hatred: In 2013, the organization purchased a home across the street from the Westboro Baptist Church compound in Topeka.
The group then painted it the colors of the rainbow and declared Equality House a symbol of peace and positive change for the LGBT community.
Now the group’s expanding its mission—literally—by buying the house next door and making it a welcoming space for trans people.
Appropriately, the new edifice has been painted the colors of the trans flag: Pink, blue and white.
“Beyond the individual incidents of violence, bullying and hateful messages that the transgender community faces already, we’ve seen a rise in discriminating legislation designed to restrict the fundamental rights and human dignity of our transgender family,” said Aaron Jackson, President of Planting Peace.
“We hear the stories from countless transgender people who express the devastating impact this has on them, making them feel broken or ’less than.’
The idea for a trans house came from 8-year-old Avery Johnson, who is transgender herself.
“I love the transgender flag—it’s beautiful and makes me smile,” says Johnson, who helped paint the new house. “I’m happy that we will have a house painted like the flag to show that transgender people are beautiful and will make them smile.”
Martin Dunn of the Dunn Development Corporation says Avery’s bravery inspired him to fund the purchase of the house.
“She should be so proud of what she has accomplished,” said Dunn. “I have three kids, and if one of my children were transgender I would want there to be places that accepted and celebrated them.”
Dunn added that he and his family live in a progressive neighborhood but he knows that’s not the reality for all young people.
“Like the Equality House before it, a transgender house that makes people feel proud, safe, confident and supported is badly needed,” he said. “Every city should have one.”
It seems the folks at Westboro Baptist have noticed their brightly colored neighbor, at least judging by this tweet.

First Teaser Image From “American Horror Story” Season 6 Surfaces
Plus: Confirmation on who is returning.
From: NewNowNext
From: NewNowNext
FX has released the first teaser image for American Horror Story’s upcoming sixth season, and it’s left a lot of questions.
Literally—the image is of two interlocking question marks creating the number “6.”
Granted that doesn’t tell us much—or does it? Is the number or the font of significance?
What we do know is that Murphy has invited most of the AHS superstars back, though Jessica Lange is a definite no.
Cheyenne Jackson is a definite yes, though. On Monday he tweeted a story that highlighted his involvement and added, Jackson said “it’s true.”
Also returning to the spooky anthology series is Angela Bassett, who’s been one of our favorite players—even in sub-par seasons.
So, where will Season 6 be set? We’re hoping for an ocean liner.

Federal Judge: Mississippi Clerks Can’t Deny Marriage Licenses To Gay Couples
The ruling means the state can't enforce part of its anti-LGBT House Bill 1523.
From: NewNowNext
From: NewNowNext
Mississippi clerks cannot cite their own religious beliefs as a reason to deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples, under a ruling from a federal judge on Monday.
The decision means the state can’t enforce part of HB 1523, a religious freedom bill that has been considered one of the worst to be recently passed in the United States, which was set to become law this Friday.
Instead, U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves is saying clerks must provide equal treatment for all couples, regardless of their sexual orientation.
Reeves is expected to rule in two other lawsuits that are attempting to block the rest of HB 1523, including decisions that could affect school bathroom policies for transgender students.
Republican Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves spoke out against the judge’s ruling.
“If this opinion by the federal court denies even one Mississippian of their fundamental right to practice their religion, then all Mississippians are denied their 1st Amendment rights,” Lt. Gov. Reeves said in a statement. “I hope the state’s attorneys will quickly appeal this decision to the 5th Circuit to protect the deeply held religious beliefs of all Mississippians.”

If 2012 was the summer of Tom Daley, 2016 will be the summer of Víctor Gutiérrez.
The 25-year-old professional water polo player and Madrid native has qualified to compete with Team Spain at the summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, just one month after discussing his sexuality for the first time publicly with the Spanish language magazine Shangay.
Though Gutiérrez said he’s been out for most of his life, he felt it was his responsibility to come out publicly.
“I’m out of the closet in my environment,” said Gutiérrez. “My family knows I’m gay, my friends too. And I’m living in such a positive way with my sexuality that I felt a responsibility to share it with others.”

He added: “Although I’m coming out, I respect those who choose not to. I have never met anyone who has judged me as an athlete for my sexuality. It has always been based on my performance. As a gay athlete, I feel the responsibility to come out because it is very important. There have been more than 70 homophobic attacks in Madrid so far this year, it is a reality that we live. And there are almost no athletes who say they are gay. But in my experience, people have changed; as an athlete, everything I have experienced is absolutely positive.”

Olly Alexander At Glastonbury: “Shove A Rainbow In Fear’s Face”
"I’m here, I’m queer, and yeah sometimes I am afraid but I am never ashamed because I am proud of who I am!"From: NewNowNext
Years & Years front-man Olly Alexander gave an impassioned speech at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, urging fans to stand in solidarity with the LGBT community in light of the recent mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.
BBC Radio 1 recorded the speech and posted it on Twitter Sunday. In it, Alexander, decked out in a fierce rainbow-colored outfit, reflected on all the “scary and messed up stuff” that has affected the queer community so far this year.
“Now, as a queer person, as queer people, we know what it’s like to be scared,” he began. “We know what it’s like to live with fear, as part of our every day.”
“But, tonight at Glastonbury,” he implored, “I would like to ask you to join me on Pride weekend, and say ‘no thank you fear.’ To say, ‘bye fear, bye.’ To literally shove a rainbow in fear’s face.”
“And all I have to say to finish is, I’m here, I’m queer, and yeah sometimes I am afraid but I am never ashamed because I am proud of who I am!”

New York Announces Plan For Memorial To Hate Crime Victims
Governor Cuomo said the Orlando attack "opened the eyes of this world to the injustice that is still done against the LGBTQ community."
From: NewNowNext
From: NewNowNext
Shortly before Sunday’s Pride parade, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the formation of a commission to produce a memorial in New York City honoring hate-crime victims, including those killed and wounded at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.
“We want this terrible event remembered,” said Cuomo at a press conference at the LGBT Center. “And we want the lesson learned so it never happens again.”
The state is contributing $1 million for the project, with additional money presumably coming from the city or private donors.
According to a press release, two potential locations have been identified: One in Battery Park City, overlooking the Statue of Liberty, and another along the Chelsea Piers in Greenwich Village.
The commission’s recommendations are due by the end of the year.
Cuomo also announced a new campaign highlighting New York’s support for LGBT rights and social justice, directed at states with less-than-stellar records.
The “Open Doors Campaign” will feature digital and broadcast spots and will air this summer in Texas, Mississippi and North Carolina, home of HB2.
“Orlando didn’t happen in a vacuum, right?” said the governor. “There’s an anti-diversity sentiment all across this country. And we’re going to run TV ads that say, ’If you feel threatened by diversity, come to New York.’”
Referencing the mass of people who gathered at vigils worldwide, and the renewed activism of LGBT community, Cuomo said the attack “has reawakened this community—which by the way never sleeps in the first place. It has opened the eyes of this world to the injustice that is still done against the LGBTQ community.”
After the announcement, Cuomo walked in the New York City Pride March alongside Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Navy Tells Sailors Discharged Under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell To Appeal, Get Records Changed
The US Naval Department started the initiative to "right a historical wrong."
From: NewNowNext
From: NewNowNext
The U.S. Navy Security is urging all former sailors and marines who were forced out of the military because of their sexuality to come forward and apply to have their discharge repealed.
Secretary Ray Mabus made the announcement in a speech earlier this month at a special Pride event held at the Pentagon. In his speech, Mabus said the Naval Department decided to take this step as a means to restore benefits and right the historical wrongs of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which saw the removal of thousands of sailors from active duty.
“If you were discharged under ’Don’t ask, don’t tell,’ come in,” Mabus said. “The Board of Corrections for Naval Records will take a look at changing that discharge characterization…If you have colleagues that were discharged under that, ask them to come in—if it’s under the regulations, get that discharge characterization changed.”
The application process generally lasts about a year and begins with an electronic form that individuals can fill out on the Board for Correction of Naval Records’ website. From there, the application is downloaded and read by members of a three person board before being heard by an official Naval committee. Once the application is approved, the former sailor will have access to veteran education and health benefits restored.
“We value the open communication and dialogue with the boards of corrections and strongly feel that the increase in our relationships will help to both encourage individuals to apply for their upgrades and understand the process,” said Matt Thor, the executive director of the military LGBT advocacy group Outserve-SLDN, in a statement.
“The boards have made a very concerted effort to address LGBT service members in their processes; we applaud them for those efforts and look forward to our continued working relationship with them.”
Since the Naval Department began offering this service in 2011, the Navy has granted 123 discharge upgrades out of 413 requests. Those requests denied were usually ones in which the former sailor had also engaged in acts of insubordination or unruly conduct.
In addition to this service, the Pentagon is also set to make an official July 1 announcement lifting the military ban on trans service members, effectively removing the last vestiges of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
Moldova Weighs “Gay Propaganda” Ban
"We want to ban the propaganda of this phenomenon because there is the danger that children might fall victim to it in schools."From: NewNowNext
Moldova is considering a ban on “gay propaganda,” similar to the one adopted by Russia in 2013.
Last month, a committee in the former Soviet republic’s parliament approved a bill that would levy fines for promoting homosexuality to minors “through public meetings, the media, the Internet,” and other means.
The legislation would add a paragraph to Article 21 of the Law on the Rights of a Child that reads: “The state ensures protection of a child from the propaganda of homosexuality for any purpose and under any form.”
The measure was endorsed by the right-wing Socialist Party, in response to claims that “homosexual propaganda in Moldova has become more aggressive.”
“What we are talking about is the public impact,” Socialist deputy Vlad Batrancea told Radio Free Europe.
“We want to ban the propaganda of this phenomenon because there is the danger that children might fall victim to it in schools. This danger is real because so many parents are working abroad and the children left behind are vulnerable to such actions.”
Four years ago, Moldova adopted an anti-discrimination law protecting gays and lesbians to help further its goal of entry in the European Union.
Whether this new ban will make its way into law is unclear, but conservatives hope it will affect upcoming presidential elections, where they will push a “traditional values” agenda.
“The Socialist Party, which gives all possible support and promotion to [anti-LGBT] movements, is simply stoking social tensions,” political analyst Petru Macovei told RFE/RL.
Homosexuality has been legal in Moldova since 1995, but LGBT citizens face many challenges. Pride celebrations have been outlawed since 2007—an LGBT rights march in May was interrupted by counter demonstrators—including Orthodox clergymen—shouting slurs and throwing eggs.
Participants only managed to march five blocks, which was the longest they’ve ever been able to maintain such an event.

Mark Indelicato Gets Campy In Spooky New Series, “Dead Of Summer”
The "Ugly Betty" star discusses playing gay in the new Freeform thriller.
From: NewNowNext
From: NewNowNext
Mark Indelicato—best known as gay teen Justin Suarez on Ugly Betty—is back on TV this week on Freeform’s new horror series, Dead of Summer, a tribute to the slasher films of the 1980s.
We caught up with Indelicato to talk about Dead of Summer, Ugly Betty, and more.
Can you tell us about Blair, your character in Dead of Summer?
Blair is the quintessential cisgender gay male on the show. He’s the gay best friend, and he’s also a camper returning as a counselor, so relationships with the other counselors have been forged already. He also has his best friend sidekick, Cricket (Amber Coney).
Did you play Blair differently since he’s an out teenager in the ’80s?
Having a gay character represented and out and proud is interesting because in 1989 you had the height of the AIDS crisis. His sexuality is not harped on; he’s just Blair and everyone knows that. I appreciated that—his sexuality is not the defining factor.
Aside from their sexuality, are Blair and Justin from Ugly Betty similar?
Blair is much more comfortable and self-aware than Justin was, in part because of the age difference. Playing Justin on Ugly Betty, our coming out process was happening at the same time, and it could have been overwhelming, but we really helped each other. My coming out was so seamless, my family knew, it was the same thing as Justin. Our coming out experiences were intertwined.Blair is the most well-adjusted of all the counselors. I’m closer to Blair, personally, than I was to Justin at the time.
As a young gay man, how did you feel when you heard about the shooting in Orlando?
I was devastated. Orlando was an explicit example of the war being waged on queer bodies in America and around the world. There are still so many attacks, micro and macro, that are being made against the LGBT community—this is another example of that. There is so much left to do in the collective community in the United States. Straight white bodies are still getting precedent… When you’re a queer person of color your life is threatened every day. We cant sit silent. We have to continue to fight for the rights that are ours and engage allies to use their power to end this.

Macklemore Makes A Case For Workplace Equality At Trailblazer Honors

Macklemore introduced Logo’s new partnership with Out Leadership at Trailblazer Honors on Saturday, and called for sweeping legislative changes to enforce greater LGBT equality in a short speech honoring the victims of the horrific shooting at Pulse nightclub.
“First let me say that my thoughts are with the loved ones of those lost at Pulse on June 12,” the singer-songwriter said.
“In the aftermath of this horrific tragedy, we cannot let fear and hatred divide us. In any civil rights movement progress can be slow. In this country you can get married one day and go back to work the next, and be fired because of your sexuality and gender identity. This has to change.”
“That’s why Logo has teamed up with Out Leadership, the first global LGBT business organization that partners with senior LGBT and ally executives” to show how increased intolerance and acceptance in the workplace can ultimately benefit big business.

Inside The “Looking” Movie World Premiere
Find out why a sequel would be like "The Golden Girls."
From: NewNowNext
From: NewNowNext
Looking: The Movie had its world premiere this past weekend at the 40th annual Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco, and the cast and crew were there to dish about the film, why the series’ sex scenes were so important and the idea of a Looking sequel.
BroadwayWorld was at the screening and they shared some highlights from the Q&A that followed the film.
A photo posted by Kevin (@kentsu13) on
“It was a challenge. We knew we had about 90 minutes to finish off everyone’s stories, without it being closed or too neatly tied,” director Andrew Haigh told the audience in the Castro Theatre. “In the last season, Patrick made a lotta mistakes; we needed to get to a point where he was feeling good about himself and everyone else, as well. [As for the ending,] we knew from the pilot, but we didn’t tell the cast. What I like about the story is that everyone is moving on, but to move on, sometimes to be happy, you have to say goodbye to things you love.”
A photo posted by Raúl Castillo (@officialraulcastillo) on
Series star Jonathan Groff said that filming was “very meta” for everyone involved. “Coming back to shoot the movie was like coming back to say goodbye to our characters and San Francisco,” Groff said. “But when I read the script, I thought: ’Omigod, that’s the perfect ending!'”
Groff also spoke about the sex scenes that showed a realistic representation of gay sex.
“Also, I had friends who didn’t know gay people could have sex while facing one another. When Russell fucked me at the end of the first season, face to face, they thought [gay sex] was always from behind. I laughed but while driving home, I thought: ’That’s so sad.’ That they think gay people can’t relate to one another while we’re having sex. That it’s just some animal act from behind. That’s why I feel so proud of the sex scenes in ’Looking.’ Because they were written and directed so beautifully.”
Is this really the end of the road for Looking?
“I love these characters. We’ve always said it would be lovely to come back in 20 or 30 years,” said Haigh. “They could be all at a gay old persons’ home and drink beer. It could be like ’The Golden Girls,’ basically.”
We’re sold.
