You may not know the name Ladislao José Bíro, but you certainly know his most famous invention: the ballpoint pen.
Bíro was born in Budapest, Hungary, into a Jewish family. A journalist by trade, Bíro noticed how efficiently newspapers were printed and how quickly the ink dried – in stark contrast to his fountain pen. He worked with his brother, György Bíro, a chemist, to develop a new type of pen made up of a ball that turned in a socket. As the ball turned, it picked up ink from a cartridge and rolled to deposit it on paper, much like a newsprint roller transfers an inked image to paper.
Bíro presented the first prototype of the ballpoint pen at the Budapest International Fair in 1931, later patenting his invention in 1938. To this day, the ballpoint pen is still referred to as the “Biro” in several countries.
Today we celebrate Bíro and his relentless, forward-thinking spirit on the 117th anniversary of his birth.
They say a cheater never wins — but Tom Brady disagrees.
The Patriots quarterback turned his Deflategate suspension into a sunny Roman holiday this week — spending his time in the NFL’s doghouse cavorting nude on the Italian coast with his supermodel spouse, Gisele Bündchen.
Brady’s head seemed far removed from the playbook and firmly focused on Bündchen’s skimpy bikini as they canoodled in the seaside town of Positano.
In the ultimate dig at long-suffering Jets fans, the ball-deflating passer wore a huge grin as the sexy fashion plate planted kisses on him in the posh resort. He even showed the world just how cheeky he really is by stripping down naked.
The news isn’t better at home for fans of Gang Green, as Brady’s team has been able to prosper without him. New England is off to a 3-0 start and is well positioned for Brady to take them to the playoffs when he returns next month. The Jets are a disappointing 1-2.
Brady was banned from the field for four games after he was caught illegally deflating footballs during the 2015 AFC Championship game.
Keith Olbermann took a look at the racism underlying Donald Trump’s campaign for president in his latest episode of his new web series The Closer.
Said Olbermann sarcastically, “I don’t know if you’ve noticed it, but there’s a slight undertone of racism to Donald Trump’s campaign. No! Really! And of course when I say ‘slight undertone’ I mean something approximately the size of the SKY.”
Olbermann focused on The Guardian‘s interview on Thursday with Trump’s Mahoning County, Ohio campaign chair Kathy Miller, in which Miller said there was no racism before President Obama took office.
Said Miller,
“If you’re black and you haven’t been successful in the last 50 years, it’s your own fault. You’ve had every opportunity, it was given to you.”
“You’ve had the same schools everybody else went to. You had benefits to go to college that white kids didn’t have. You had all the advantages and didn’t take advantage of it. It’s not our fault, certainly.”
Kathy Miller ended up resigning her post on last Thursday.
But as Olbermann points out, Miller resigning doesn’t change one simple fact about her involvement with the Trump campaign: “[Kathy Miller] is the Trump campaign. She is him. She is all of them. Living a whole life made up of, ‘If it didn’t happen to me, it didn’t happen.'”
Donald Trump was off to a great start: he acknowledged that he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and that he hoped to profit off the housing crisis.
And God bless Clinton for saying that Trump lives in his own reality. If by reality, you mean make-believe universe, that’s totally accurate.
One of Donald Trump’s company’s did illegal business with Cuba, violating the U.S. trade embargo, Newsweek reports:
A company controlled by Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, secretly conducted business in Communist Cuba during Fidel Castro’s presidency despite strict American trade bans that made such undertakings illegal, according to interviews with former Trump executives, internal company records and court filings.
Documents show that the Trump company spent a minimum of $68,000 for its 1998 foray into Cuba at a time when the corporate expenditure of even a penny in the Caribbean country was prohibited without U.S. government approval. But the company did not spend the money directly. Instead, with Trump’s knowledge, executives funneled the cash for the Cuba trip through an American consulting firm called Seven Arrows Investment and Development Corp. Once the business consultants traveled to the island and incurred the expenses for the venture, Seven Arrows instructed senior officers with Trump’s company—then called Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts—how to make it appear legal by linking it after the fact to a charitable effort.
Trump vowed to maintain the embargo on Cuba on the first day of his presidential campaign, the magazine adds.
Rachel Maddow previewed the new report on her show last night:
Marco Rubio says he’s “deeply concerned” and says Trump will have to “answer some questions.”
“This is something they’re gonna have to give a response to. I mean, it was a violation of American law, if that’s how it happened,” Rubio said on the ESPN/ABC “Capital Games” podcast.
Still feeling hungover from Monday night’s doozy of a debate? Us, too. Thankfully, we’ve found the perfect remedy to restore our senses of humor and faith in humanity…
Meet Jack Lewis. He’s a hunky scaffolder from the U.K. who also does a pretty impressive Jurassic Park dinosaur impersonation.
Clearly he’s been practicing because Lewis has completely mastered impressions of a several notable dinosaurs. And the videos of him demonstrating these impressions are circulating online
Check out his T-Rex…
And how about his velociraptor…
Looks like Chris Pratt may have found a new co-star.
With the first presidential debate just behind us and millions tuned in, Keith Olbermann wants to remind America yet again why Donald Trump must never be elected president of the United States.
Olbermann returned to political punditry this year with his new GQ web series “The Closer”, the first installation of which saw him detailing 176 shocking things that Donald Trump has done during his “15-month assault on American democracy.”
However, Olbermann missed a few deplorables. It turns out that when you lie and court controversy as often as Trump does, it can be hard to keep an accurate tally. As Olbermann put it, paraphrasing Body Heat, “Sometimes the Trump comes down so heavy I feel like I should wear a hat.”
To update his list, Olbermann chronicles 74 more insane things Donald Trump has done…in just the last month.
Among the items you might have missed? The fact that Trump “claims that he keeps himself in good physical shape by exercise consisting of making many hand gestures while he gives speeches.”
Olbermann also covers Trump’s Birther news conference, his son’s flirtation with anti-semitism and bigoted use of Skittles to describe the Syrian refugee crisis, and of course, Hillary Clinton’s bout with pneumonia.
By most accounts, Hillary Clinton won the first presidential debate, which was marked by constant meltdowns from Republican nominee Donald Trump, and a lot of distracting sniffling. Watch the full debate above, if you missed it.
Nate Silver believes Clinton should get a bounce from this debate performance, and if she doesn’t then we do really need to worry about Trump winning the election:
What if Clinton doesn’t improve in the polls — or they even move toward Trump? Then that ought to be scary for Democrats, obviously. While Trump’s lack of preparation could also potentially cause him problems in the second and third debates, he showed off some of his worst qualities on Monday night, appearing to be the weaker leader than Clinton and less presidential than her, according to the CNN poll. If undecided and marginal voters were willing to shrug off Trump’s performance, then perhaps they really are in the mood for the sort of change that Trump represents, his faults be damned.
Here are a few highlights for the two of you who missed it:
Social media users wondered, is Trump ill? And many wondered, like Governor Howard Dean, if it was just a bad cocaine problem?
A meme featuring Clinton facing off against Lloyd Bridges in Airplane! went viral.
Yes, but the issues. Clinton went on the attack early, pointing out the fact that Trump got a $14 million loan from his father.
Perhaps Clinton’s best moment came when Donald Trump was asked about his taxes.
Hillary Clinton accused Donald Trump of pulling a “bait and switch” when he began talking about Clinton’s emails during a pointed question about his tax returns from Lester Holt.
For 40 years, everyone running for president has released their tax returns. You can go and see nearly, I think, 39, 40 years of our tax returns, but everyone has done it. We know the IRS has made clear there is no prohibition on releasing it when you’re under audit.
So you’ve got to ask yourself, why won’t he release his tax returns? And I think there may be a couple of reasons. First, maybe he’s not as rich as he says he is. Second, maybe he’s not as charitable as he claims to be.
Third, we don’t know all of his business dealings, but we have been told through investigative reporting that he owes about $650 million to Wall Street and foreign banks. Or maybe he doesn’t want the American people, all of you watching tonight, to know that he’s paid nothing in federal taxes, because the only years that anybody’s ever seen were a couple of yearswhen he had to turn them over to state authorities when he was trying to get a casino license, and they showed he didn’t pay any federal income tax
What did Trump have to say to that? “That makes me smart.”
Clinton went on:
So if he’s paid zero, that means zero for troops, zero for vets, zero for schools or health. And I think probably he’s not all that enthusiastic about having the rest of our country see what the real reasons are, because it must be something really important, even terrible, that he’s trying to hide.
And the financial disclosure statements, they don’t give you the tax rate. They don’t give you all the details that tax returns would. And it just seems to me that this is something that the American people deserve to see. And I have no reason to believe that he’s ever going to release his tax returns, because there’s something he’s hiding.
And we’ll guess. We’ll keep guessing at what it might be that he’s hiding. But I think the question is, were he ever to get near the White House, what would be those conflicts? Who does he owe money to? Well, he owes you the answers to that, and he should provide them.
Trump appeared to come unhinged at several moments, particularly this exchange where he accused Clinton of “fighting ISIS your entire adult life.”

A question about remarks Trump had made about Clinton’s presidential “look” turned into a winning moment for Clinton as she showed why she has got “stamina” and then pivoted to some of the remarks Trump has made about women:
CLINTON: You know, he tried to switch from looks to stamina. But this is a man who has called women pigs, slobs and dogs, and someone who has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers, who has said…
TRUMP: I never said that.
CLINTON: …. women don’t deserve equal pay unless they do as good a job as men.
TRUMP: I didn’t say that.
CLINTON: And one of the worst things he said was about a woman in a beauty contest. He loves beauty contests, supporting them and hanging around them. And he called this woman “Miss Piggy.” Then he called her “Miss Housekeeping,” because she was Latina. Donald, she has a name.
TRUMP: Where did you find this? Where did you find this?
CLINTON: Her name is Alicia Machado.
TRUMP: Where did you find this?
CLINTON: And she has become a U.S. citizen, and you can bet…
TRUMP: Oh, really?
CLINTON: … she’s going to vote this November.
TRUMP: OK, good. Let me just tell you…
(APPLAUSE)
Completely losing it, Trump then turned to a long-ago feud with Rosie O’Donnell, perhaps the cherry on the sundae of his pathetic performance.
“You know, Hillary is hitting me with tremendous commercials. Some of it’s said in entertainment. Some of it’s said — somebody who’s been very vicious to me, Rosie O’Donnell, I said very tough things to her, and I think everybody would agree that she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her.”

Hillary Clinton responded to Donald Trump’s complaints about his microphone during last night’s presidential debate with a zinger: “Anybody who complains about the microphone is not having a good night.”
Clinton made the remark to a gaggle of press on her campaign plane on Tuesday. The assembled group of journalists can be heard reacting to Clinton’s barb thrown at Trump at the very end of the below clip.
As Talking Points Memo points out, Trump went on Fox and Friends earlier to complain about his mic:
“I had a problem with a microphone that didn’t work. My microphone was terrible. I wonder, was it set up that way on purpose? My microphone, in the room they couldn’t hear me, you know, it was going on and off. Which isn’t exactly great. I wonder if it was set up that way, but it was terrible.”
Real Clear Politics reports on Clinton’s comments to her press pool right before she made her zinger:
I think viewers got a real chance to begin to compare us on policy…
I think his demeanor, his temperament, his behavior on the stage could be seen by everybody. People can draw their own conclusions, and I thought on several occasions, he was making charges and claims that were demonstrably untrue. Offering opinions that I think a lot of people find offensive. He can represent himself how he chooses, but the real point is about temperament and fitness and qualification to hold the most important, hardest job in the world, and I think people saw last night, there were some very clear differences between us…
Governor Jerry Brown just signed into law a bill that will ensure that high-risk HIV-negative Californians will receive information about PrEP, PEP and other HIV prevention measures following any test for the virus.
AB 2640 was co-sponsored by the LA LGBT Center and APLA Health and passed by the Senate and Assembly last August. The bill is intended to improve statewide education on PrEP and other protective tools.
“We are extremely pleased that Governor Brown has signed this bill into law,” APLA Health Chief Executive Officer Craig E. Thompson said.
“This is one of several proposals the governor has supported to increase information about and the availability of PrEP and PEP, and we thank him for his continued leadership on this issue,” he added. “AB 2640 is a crucial step toward raising awareness about effective HIV prevention tools, reducing new infections, and ending the epidemic in California.”
It’s hoped that the bill will help disseminate information and awareness about HIV status and prevention to people of all income and education levels.
“With the stroke of his pen, Governor Brown has played a significant and groundbreaking role in helping to fight HIV in the state that ranks second in the nation in cumulative AIDS cases,” Los Angeles LGBT Center Medical Director Dr. Robert Bolan remarked.
“Those most at risk of HIV infection deserve to know about all the options to stay negative, including PrEP and PEP,” he concluded. “By signing AB 2640, Governor Brown is helping to promote options that have the potential to change the course of the epidemic in California and significantly reduce the HIV infection rate here.”
AB 2640 is the latest in a string of pro-LGBT measures passed by the state, including the launch of a transgender employment program, a bill mandating schools to have comprehensive suicide-prevention plans, a new LGBT history requirement in schools and a law that prevents LGBT discrimination at faith-based colleges.
California lawmakers have approved a ban on state-funded travel to other states that discriminate against LGBT people.
Introduced by Assembly Member Evan Low (above and right) last February and signed by California Governor Jerry Brown on September 27th, AB 1887 prohibits “a state agency and the Legislature from requiring any of its employees, officers, or members to travel to, or approving a request for state-funded or state-sponsored travel to, any state that, after June 26, 2015, has enacted a law that voids or repeals, or has the effect of voiding or repealing, existing state or local protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression or has enacted a law that authorizes or requires discrimination against same-sex couples or their families or on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, as specified, subject to certain exceptions.”
In May, Low said that AB 1887 – sponsored by Equality California and the National Center for Lesbian Rights – “sends a clear message that we do not tolerate discrimination in California or anywhere beyond our borders. Just as we strive to be a state that provides equal opportunity for all,” he added “we should not be spending our tax dollars in states that allow discrimination toward the LGBT community. We are stronger by being inclusive.”
Earlier this year, Washington, Vermont, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle and New York banned official travel to North Carolina because of that state’s contentious HB2 law.
Is there any way to make Monday night’s debate less painful?
In the songified version, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie replace Lester Holt as moderator and attempt to turn the Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton showdown into a melodic rapture.
Agnes Nixon, creator of legendary soap operas All My Children and One Life To Live, passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 93.
Nixon was a dominant force in the world of soaps for over four decades and was described as the “grand dame of daytime serial drama” by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, who awarded her an honorary Daytime Emmy in 2010.
“It is with a heavy heart I mourn the passing of television pioneer Agnes Nixon, someone I was proud to call a friend. Agnes’ impact on daytime television and pop culture is undeniable,” said Robert A. Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Co.
“She was the first to champion socially relevant topics, and the towns and characters Agnes brought to life leave an indelible imprint on television that will be remembered forever.”
Nixon was well-known for pushing progressive story lines in her soaps, noticeably on topics such as abortion, AIDS and same-sex marriage long before prime-time programs were willing to touch them.
“Agnes was responsible for so many bold stories. They were social motivators and Agnes was at the forefront of that,” said Jessica Klein, the head writer of the revived online version of One Life to Live.
“She was a champion of women. She never talked down to her audience,” she continued. “She believed in character drama, which is really what soap operas are. There’s no harder job than writing for soap operas. It’s 52 weeks a year, and there are no repeats. Agnes never stopped.”
Agnes is survived by four children, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
