US Gymnast Danell Leyva Strips Down at Rio 2016 (and Ukraine Follows Suit)

From: Towleroad
Two-time silver medalist and LGBT ally Danell Leyva gave gymnastics fans in Rio a bit of a treat yesterday when he stripped down in the middle of a routine.

Leyva was performing in the gymnastics gala, an event that awards no medals and is merely for fun, when he decided to give the audience something besides his stunning athleticism to look at: his bare flesh.

Team USA Men’s gymnastics had said they thought competing shirtless would bring them more attention to their sport and it seems Leyva was out to prove the point. Pausing in his parallel bar routine, he peeled away his skintight uniform, rolling it down to just below his waist. According to NBC announcers, Leyva wants to move to LA and become an actor after Rio. Consider this his screen test.

Leyva wasn’t the only one to strip down, however. Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev, who beat Leyva for the gold medal on the parallel bars, seemingly following Leyva’s lead, stripped down as well.

You can watch an extended video of Leyva working the parallel bars, here.

Sources Claim Lochte Lied About Rio Robbery; Footage Shows Fight With Security Guard

From: Queerty
According to Brazilian sources, Ryan Lochte and his three teammates lied about being robbed at gunpoint this past weekend.

To make matters worse, the sources have released surveillance footage that shows one of the swimmers fighting with a gas station security guard, according to ABC.

And allegedly, they offered employees money at the gas station to cover for damages to the bathroom.

A Brazilian police source tells ABC News “”one of the swimmers was seen on CCTV footage breaking down the door to the bathroom at [a] gas station and fighting with a security guard.”

He claims the swimmers “offered 100 reals and $20” to cover any damages.

ABC acquired the footage, which you can watch below.

Ryan Lochte Keeps Changing His Story About That Alleged Robbery

From: Queerty
As it has been reported, claims by Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte that he was robbed at gunpoint along with three fellow teammates has raised loads of speculation as to the veracity of his story, with Brazilian authorities trying to figure out what really happened on Sunday morning.

One thing that’s not helping matters: the fact that details about the alleged robbery keep changing in significant ways.

During a brief telephone interview with TODAY‘s Matt Lauer, Lochte contradicted his earlier account of the robbery, which he’d related to TODAY’s Billy Bush earlier this week:

The guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and said ‘get down.’ I was like (puts hands up) I put my hands up. I was like ‘whatever.’ He took our money, he took my wallet.

But speaking with Lauer, Lochte said the gun was aimed in his “general direction.”

He initially told Bush, “We got pulled over in our taxi and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge. No lights, no nothing, just a police badge. They pulled us over, they pulled out their guns.”

But in the version he told Lauer, the taxi wasn’t forced off the road. Instead, they’d stopped the taxi at a gas station to use the bathroom, and that’s when they were robbed.

Speaking to Bob Costas, Lauer confirmed the story had changed:
“When he talked to me tonight, he said, ‘that’s when the guy pointed the gun in my direction and cocked it.’ And I pointedly said to him, ‘you had said before it was placed on your forehead and cocked.’ He said, ‘No, that’s not exactly what happened.’ And I think he feels it was more of a traumatic mis-characterization. I think people listening at home might feel that was embellishment at the time, but that’s up to people to decide.”

As BBC News reports, CCTV footage featuring the four swimmers — Lochte, Jimmy Feigen, Jack Conger, and Gunnar Bentz — has become key evidence in the investigation, particularly since the athletes appear totally relaxed as they pass through a metal detector and take items from their pockets.

As one Brazilian judge noted, “They arrived with their psychological and physical integrity unshaken.”

Lochte is currently back in the states, but, as CNN reports, teammates Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were removed from their flight from Rio de Janeiro to the United States on Wednesday night. They’ve been ordered to stay in Brazil for questioning as authorities try to make sense of the various claims. and have been ordered to stay in Brazil.

Lochte’s attorney Jeff Ostrow thinks the athletes are being unfairly scrutinized and taken advantage of by Brazilian police, telling CNN:
When you have one of America’s athletes who comes out and said something happened to him that happens to people there every single day, that doesn’t look good for a country trying to have a successful Olympics.”
Nevertheless, perhaps the shadiest aspect of this unwieldy story is the following soundbite by Billy Bush, explaining why he ultimately believes Lochte:
I spoke to him about four hours after he got into Olympic Village — or five hours — they’ve been out all night long,” he said. “He’s not the kind that can weave a brilliant tale when he’s hasn’t been out all night long, pardon me. (Emphasis ours.) The fact that he told this story so mellifluously makes me think, well, he could not have invented the whole thing.”

Pole vaulter denies that his penis knocked him out of the Olympics

Another example that sports is a matter of inches.
From: OutSports
While most men, gay or straight, would brag about having a powerful penis, a Japanese pole vaulter is denying that his pole helped knock him out of the Olympic men's pole vault competition.

Hiroki Ogita became an Internet hit this week when video appeared to show his penis hitting the crossbar on a failed jump:

It was amusing but Ogita was not initially laughing.

"I never expected the foreign media to take me down like this," the 28-year-old athlete tweeted, according to the BBC.

"It's one thing if it was true, but I have to say I'm pretty devastated that they'd go so far to make something up to mock and ridicule me so much."

The reality is that the bar was going to fall regardless of Ogita's penis hitting it or not, since he had already knocked it first with his thigh. "He had already pressed on the crossbar so much," pole vaulting coach David Yeo told the BBC. "The crossbar was bound to dislodge. I think it was just the crumpling of the fabric which happened at the wrong position."

Ogita proved to be a good sport, later tweeting: "Watching again, this is pretty funny, if I say so myself. LOL."

Ogita finished 21st and did not reach the finals. He jumped 17 feet, 8 inches, but was knocked out, penis and all, at his attempt to clear 18-3. The pole vault was won in stunning fashion by Thiago Braz da Silva of Brazil, who set an Olympic record.

Le Clos but no Cigar

From: Speed o Rex

The rivalry between Michael Phelps (USA) and Chad Le Clos (South Africa) is well known, stemming from but not limited to Le Clos' victory in the 200m Butterfly at the 2012 London Olympic Games.  In that even, Phelps was surprised with his first butterfly lost in more than a decade.

At the Rio 2016 Olympics the two were often brought into proximity, including the famous pictures of Michael Phelps giving Chad Le Clos the "death stare" shortly before beating him in the 200m Butterfly event.

Now Michael Phelps says he was not even aware of Le Clos' presence, that apparently Le Clos meant no more to him than a bug on a wall...  believe that?  Phelps stated on USA's NBC Today Show:  "I just had music going on in my head. I had thoughts going on in my head, spitting water a little bit all over the place, so I was in my own zone..." he continued "I was not intentionally mean mugging him or giving him a dirty look."

Sure, right Michael...

Whatever was happening between the two, the pictures are great, aren't they?

Both swimmers have provided great sport over time and we wish them well...

I Was Rooting For You, Ryan Lochte—We Were ALL Rooting For You!

Brazilian police claim the Olympic swimmer and his teammates were never robbed, but did trash a gas station bathroom.
From: NewNowNext
We’ll admit we were hypnotized by Ryan Lochte’s soulful eyes and Adonis-like body. But if reports from Brazil are to be believed, the Olympic swimmer and his teammates made up their story about being robbed at gunpoint to cover drunkenly destroying a gas-station bathroom.

According to Daily Mail police in Rio say Lochte, 32, and three other Team USA swimmers were intoxicated when they demolished the restroom, and it was a security guard who pulled a gun on them—demanding that they pay for damages.

“They stopped at a gas station and they were all really drunk. They went to the toilet and damaged it pretty badly,” a source tells the paper. “The security guy saw them and started arguing with them – telling them they had to pay. They refused and argued back. He pointed his gun at them and insisted they pay for the damage – they gave him some money and left.”

Security footage showing the athletes demolishing the bathroom and being stopped by the guard has surfaced.

Swimmers Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were taken off a flight and detained by Brazilian police. A judge also ordered Lochte’s passport be seized, but he had already boarded a flight to Charlotte, North Carolina.

He even posed for a photo on his flight home with American Airlines flight attendant David Anthony, who posted the picture online with the caption, ’I couldn’t make it to #Rio for the Olympics this year, so the Olympics came to me. Now if only Ryan Lochte would go on a date with me!”

Lochte maintains he and his fellow swimmers were really robbed. He told Matt Lauer footage of him laughing and smiling after the incident were a result of his being “in shock.”

“I wouldn’t make up a story like this nor would the others — as a matter of fact we all feel it makes us look bad,’ Lochte told Lauer. “We’re victims in this and we’re happy that we’re safe.”

His attorney, Jeff Ostrow says the athletes are being unfairly targeted for shining a light on Rio’s crime problem.

“When you have one of America’s athletes who comes out and said something happened to him that happens to people there every single day.”

Gawker Is Shutting Down For Good Next Week

The company is blaming gay billionaire Peter Thiel's "clandestine legal campaign."
From: NewNowNext
Two days after the Univision network purchased Gawker for $135 million in a court-ordered auction, the website has announced it “will be shutting down next week.”

The gossip blog’s 14-year reign was essentially destroyed by a lawsuit both the company and CEO Nick Denton lost against Terry “Hulk Hogan” Bollea, over a private sex tape Gawker published and refused to remove years ago.

Writer J.K. Trotter announced the news in a Gawker post shortly after staff were notified this afternoon. It reads in full:

“After nearly fourteen years of operation, Gawker.com will be shutting down next week. The decision to close Gawker comes days after Univision successfully bid $135 million for Gawker Media’s six other websites, and four months after the Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel revealed his clandestine legal campaign against the company.
Nick Denton, the company’s outgoing CEO, informed current staffers of the site’s fate on Thursday afternoon, just hours before a bankruptcy court in Manhattan will decide whether to approve Univision’s bid for Gawker Media’s other assets. The near-term plans for Gawker.com’s coverage, as well as the site’s archives, have not yet been finalized.”

Bollea’s lawsuit was bankrolled by gay billionaire Peter Thiel, who made millions as an initial investor at PayPal. In an op-ed published by the New York Times on Tuesday, Thiel justified his legal campaign against Gawker and Denton as payback for forcibly outing him publicly in 2007.

“I had begun coming out to people I knew, and I planned to continue on my own terms,” Thiel wrote. “Instead, Gawker violated my privacy and cashed in on it.”

#TBT: That Time Bianca Del Rio Won An Olympic Silver Medal

What have you done today?
From: NewNowNext
Two years before Bianca Del Rio snagged the titled of America’s Next Drag Superstar on RuPaul’s Drag Race, she posed as Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney in a photo shoot for New York’s gay Next magazine.

As you may recall, Maroney was going viral at the time for the salty look she was sporting at her silver medal ceremony at the 2012 London Olympics. The resulting meme was the hottest thing (not including Tom Daley) to come out of the Games that year.

Never one to be outdone, Bianca inserted herself into the meme by dressing up in McKayla Maroney drag and recreating the scene for Next’s 2012 Summer Yearbook issue, shot by Kevin Thomas Garcia.

The priceless meme’d meme even inspired a few memes of its own:

The issue also featured Bianca on the cover as Eva Perón, a hilarious ordeal that drew a crowd of tourists in Central Park while it was being shot.

Writer and former Rentboy staffer Elle Estanol wrote about the experience in a post on his blog. Check out his behind-the-scenes video from that day, below:

This may be the sweetest crossover the Fruit Games have ever seen. Pear's ball-handling skills stem from years of practice in a sunny corner of the orchard. The nearby buds would cheer from their trees as perfectly placed shots fell into the fruit basket. "I had big, juicy dreams back then," said Pear, "and now they're all blossoming!"

Don't let the green ap-pear-ance fool you: Pear is ripe and ready to leaf it all on the court!
