Then go back and hit the ones you missed. It’s fun, peaceful and good for your right brain.

7 Ways to Have Safer Sex Even Without a Condom

From: plus
Safer-Sex Without a Condom

OK, guys, the truth is out.  We’re not using condoms.  A recent report indicates that gay and bisexual men have been having more and more condomless sex since 2008. By 2014, over 40 percent of both HIV-negative and HIV-positive gay and bi men reported having sex without condoms. Clearly, it’s time to admit that the condom-only focus isn’t working.

Sure condoms are still an excellent way to practice safer sex. When worn correctly, a condom is extremely effective in preventing the transmission of HIV. For gay men, the consistent use of condoms is 76 percent effective in preventing new HIV infections during anal sex. But that cavet says it all, “consistent use” is essential for condoms to prevent HIV (unless combined with other prevention methods like PrEP).

How long are we going to deny that we’re having sex without condoms? How long are we going to pretend that the only guys who go bareback are sluts, party boys, or young men who don’t care about their sexual health?

Researchers found that the condom decline wasn’t reflective of increases in other, non-condom-based prevention strategies like PrEP or serosorting. For the most part, we aren’t replacing condoms with other HIV-preventative alternatives.

So let's look at the options that are available for condomless safer sex.

5 Reasons I Don't Like Hookup Culture

Hooking up has revolutionized normative ways of courting, but it is not something everyone is into.
From: Pride
By popular definition, a hookup involves some form of brief, sexual intimacy. Hookups can last a few minutes, but don’t usually go beyond a few hours. They are merely a physical act, and anyone involved in them usually shuts down any interactions or connections that might lead to emotional attachment. I’ve enjoyed hooking up (and sometimes I miss it!), but there are plenty of reasons why I just don’t do it any more. So here’s why I don’t like hook up culture.

1.
Drinking seems to usually be a part of the equation

Personally, drunk sex isn’t going to happen with me. I like to be aware during a sexual encounter, so I would like my partner to be as well. One drink is one thing, but getting hammered and then trying to have sex is another. Drinking heavily and then trying to engage with sex can also promote rape culture, and alcohol has a tendency to erase communication for safe sexual negotiations.

2.
People dismiss feelings

The concepts that a conventional hookup implies are as follows: No feelings. Don’t get jealous when your hookup has sex with other partners. Don’t get attached. Be uninhibited, always. Don’t pay them much attention. Don’t have your feelings hurt if they don’t respond to texts. If anyone has feelings, then they must be trying to force monogamy into the situations and trap the other person into a relationship.

I thought hookups were casual? The level of self-policing that goes into hooking up is exhausting and, quite frankly, makes me sad.

Sex does elicit feelings; sometimes positive emotions spring up, and sometimes negative ones come out as well. Sex can remind you of previous connections, or cause new ones to form. One can still choose to keep things unintentional, even if they have feelings for someone, and you can always talk to them to see if they might be interested in making the relationship more serious. If it doesn't work and things need to end because someone wants something more serious, that’s okay — there is nothing wrong with expressing that need.

3.
Online dating passes off bigotry as a mere "fondness" for certain groups

Excluding a race, presentation, or body type while using language like “preference” is prejudiced and narrow-minded.  There’s really no argument there.  "Not Fats," "No Femmes," "No Asians," "Masc Only" are all dehumanizing ideologies.

4.
 It can be risky

HIV, STI’s, and pregnancy can all be unwanted factors in hooking up. I’ve been lied to about someone’s status before. Aside from infections and potential baby decisions, hooking up means you spend time naked and alone with someone you don’t know well. The faux intimacy could put you at risk for anything from emotional damage, to being physically taken advantage of. I had a guy take his condom off during a hook up once. Yeah, it was a total dick move and is blurred assault because of how he broke my boundaries, but I was also at fault for allowing someone who I didn’t know and did not trust to touch my body. Whenever you hook up, there is a lot of potential for it to be unsafe.

5.
Bad sex

Hookup culture is, quite possibly, and above all other things, incongruous. After having hookups, sex can become thoughtless and mechanical, because emotion isn’t allowed in. We don’t sexually connect with all people. A profile photo on a dating app or a drunken conversation really isn’t a good indicator of whether or not you will have sexual chemistry with someone.

Sex is supposed to be a time when people can let go of repression. Hook up culture does fight oppressive behaviors in traditional monogamy, but it can also cause people to repress things themselves.

Lotte Reiniger’s 117th birthday

Lotte Reininger created visually stunning and fantastical films using black cardboard, scissors, and boundless imagination. Pre-dating Walt Disney by nearly a decade, Reiniger pioneered a style of animation that relied on thousands of photos of paper cut-out silhouettes arranged to tell a story. It was a painstaking process that involved moving paper characters ever so slightly and snapping a photo of each movement.

Nearly a century later, Reiniger continues to inspire animators and artists, including doodler Olivia Huynh who built almost everything, from the puppets to the top down camera rig. On what would have been her 117th birthday, we celebrate Reiniger’s limitless creativity and pioneering spirit.

Transgender Rights Bill Passed In Massachusetts

"You can’t tell people it’s okay to work at the diner, but it’s not to sit at the lunch counter."
From: NewNowNext
While states like North Carolina are facing backlash over their anti-LGBT laws, the state of Massachusetts has decided to do better.

A bill was passed in the Massachusetts House of Representatives on Wednesday that is aimed at protecting trans people from being discriminated against in public places, including bathrooms.

The bill was passed with a vote of 116 to 36, which means the margin was wide enough to make it veto-proof.

House Chairman of the Judiciary Committee John Fernandes stated that public accommodations are the “bedrock” of anti-discrimination and that the bill would be the next logical step after their 2011 law that protects trans people from being discriminated against in the workplace.

“You can’t tell people it’s OK to work at the diner, but it’s not to sit at the lunch counter,” said Fernandes. “We learned that a long time ago.”

The day was long and emotional for lawmakers, as they have been trying to pass similar legislation for the past eight years.

As for the bill becoming a law, the state Senate has already approved a measure similar to this and Governor Charlie Baker hinted that he would sign a bill of this kind if it made it to his desk.

Right-Wing Hate Group Threatens “Bloodbath” At Kiev Pride

Organizers of the march remain defiant under threat of violence.
From: NewNowNext
Members of the neo-Nazi hate group Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) have once again threatened violence at the Kiev Pride march planned in the Ukrainian capital later this month, promising a “bloodbath” in the city center for any pro-LGBT revelers in attendance.

The group, which is backed by the Ukraine Orthodox Church, hopes to repeat the type of chaos they inflicted at last year’s Pride march, where police were forced to disperse pro-LGBT revelers as members of the OUN violently descended on marchers with a show of force (below).

“Our colleagues from the OUN movement have released a strong statement about the gay march in Kiev. In short, on June 12, there will be a bloodbath in Kiev,” the organization’s spokesman, Artem Skoropadsky, wrote on his Facebook. “The organizers of the march still have time not to hold the march.”

A separate statement from the organization itself reads: “Today, we are forced to accept LGBT marches and festivals, and thus join the ranks of sinners and those who cover them. Who is going to be equated on this Sabbath? Immoral freaks, clowns and degenerates will be equated with those who have honor and dignity, respect and love for their neighbor, soldiers who gave their lives and health protecting peace in the country?”

Despite the threat of violence, organizers of Kiev Pride will likely decide to move forward with the festivities.

The organization posted an interview with Ukraine Department of Public Communications director Marina Honda yesterday, wherein she assures “we do not want a repetition of 2015” and that police will be on hand to make sure the events happen safely.

New Study Shows More Americans Are Having Gay Sex

"What we're seeing is a movement toward more sexual freedom."
From: NewNowNext
New research from Widener, Florida Atlantic, and San Diego State Universities points to not only an increase in same-sex experimentation among American adults, but also an increased acceptance of such behavior.

The study, published this week in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, analyzed data collected over the course of 40 years from 1973-2014. It included responses from over 30,000 Americans who were asked about their sexual behavior and their attitudes towards same-sex relationships.

The results show that the number of Americans who have had sex with someone of the same sex doubled from 1990 to 2014 for both men (4.5% to 8.2%) and women (3.6% to 8.7%). Study author Jean Twenge of San Diego State University says the interesting thing about these results is that they don’t appear to be driven solely by individuals who identify as LGBT; in fact, the number of people who reported having sex with both men and women shot up from 3.1% to 7.7% in the same time frame.

“What we’re seeing is a movement toward more sexual freedom,” says Twenge. “There’s more freedom for people to do what they want without following the traditional, often now seen as outdated, social rules about who you’re supposed to have sex with and when.”

The survey also analyzed trends in public opinion towards same-sex activity. In 1973, 11% of Americans believed there was no problem with it. In 1990, the number inched upward to just 13%. However, by 2014, the number soared to 49%, with 63% of Millenials reporting that they saw nothing wrong at all with nontraditional sexual behavior.

Study author Brooke Wells of Widener University says the data proves that “more and more young people today are sort of rejecting those very strict labels of gay, straight, or bisexual and saying, ’I’m fluid or queer.'”

Twenge adds that “Overall, it suggests that our sexuality has become much more free and open, that Americans feel much more freedom to express themselves sexually in a way that they see fit.”

Justin Trudeau Just Did Another Wonderful Thing For Gays In Canada

"A lot of people fought for a long time for this day to happen."
From: NewNowNext
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau raised a Pride flag on Parliament Hill yesterday for the first time in the country’s history in an all-party show of support for LGBT Canadians.

“This is a great day for Canada and it’s part of a long series of milestones this country has hit over the years,” Trudeau said. “It hasn’t been easy, it hasn’t been automatic, a lot of people fought for a long time for this day to happen.”

The moment was made even more significant by the fact that members of parliament representing the spectrum of political parties were in attendance.

“Canada is united in its defense of rights and it’s standing up for LGBTQ rights,” he said. “And quite frankly…we still have more work to do.”

He specified that his government is currently pushing a transgender rights bill in order to protect trans people in the country.
