The man’s wife opened up about the incident to China Daily, saying that the baby’s father and grandfather conspired to have him murdered after discovering that he was born with both male and female genitalia.
For the duration of her pregnancy, the Chinese couple had been told that they would be having a girl. When the baby finally arrived on May 13 in Anyang in Henan province, however, doctors confirmed that the child was intersex.
“We thought we would have a girl. But soon we were told the ’girl’ is actually a boy, with an atrophic sex organ. We panicked and got concerned,” Yang Xiaoqing, the mother, told the local paper. She added that when her husband was told the news, he blew up, saying that their child was “neither a boy nor a girl but a monster.”
It was then that the father made his first attempt at killing the baby, using a wet towel to smother him. Yang heard its cries and was able to intervene. Three days later, he again attempted to smother the infant, this time with a towel and diapers. Yang again intervened.
According to Yang, her husband’s father then absconded with the baby because his son “could not bear to kill his own flesh and blood.” Once Yang noticed that her child had disappeared, she contacted local authorities who later found the baby abandoned on the outskirts of the village.
Yang was understandably heartbroken when the starving child was brought back to her, saying that though “he may be a monster to others…he is and will always be my sweetest baby.” Yang’s husband has since been taken into custody, leaving Yang alone to raise both the couple’s new baby and their other child, a young daughter.
In spite of these new challenges, what she worries about most is that her son may “suffer discrimination when he grows up.” Unfortunately, this is almost certain to come to pass as Chinese society continues to struggle with problematic stigmas associated with non-normative gender and sexual identities.
