Joni Sledge of Sister Sledge Dies @ 60

So many musicians of the '70s and '80s are dying way too young — the latest is Joni Sledge, one of the family act Sister Sledge, whose “We Are Family” was one of the most memorable hits of the late '70s.



Sledge's body was reportedly discovered in her Phoenix home Friday. A family statement read:

Yesterday, numbness fell upon our family. We are saddened to inform you that our dear sister, mother, aunt and cousin, Joni passed away yesterday. Please pray for us as we weep for this loss. We do know that she is now eternally with Our Lord.

Nile Rodgers, who co-wrote “We Are Family” with the late Bernard Edwards, both of Chic, posted a remembrance of Sledge on Twitter:

In an age when so much female-fronted music is little more than bragging about having purchased the biggest butt around, the feminist slant of “We Are Family” is to be admired:
