Daily Mail Celebrates Jack Laugher And Chris Mears’ Gold Medal By Questioning Their Sexuality

The paper's #masculinitysofragile it can't handle this "unmanly" hug.

Noted LGBT allies Chris Mears and Jack Laugher scored an Olympic gold medal in the synchronized 3m springboard Wednesday night and celebrated with an emotional embrace.

The moment was beautiful and uplifting for Team GB as well as viewers at home — everyone except for the Daily Mail, which published a homophobic article that questioned their sexualities (both are straight) and criticized their masculinity over the hug.

The headline read: “Steady on chaps! Britain’s victorious synchronised divers hug for joy after winning gold – while China’s bronze medalists settle for a manly pat on the back.”

The article ran with a photo comparing Mears and Laugher’s embrace with that of two Chinese divers nearby, who opted for a less animated embrace.

The headline immediately sparked outrage on social media, prompting the Mail to rewrite it and publish a follow-up piece on the guys’ respective girlfriends.

Mears and Laugher, who’ve both been outwardly supportive of the LGBT community, posing for gay magazines and advocating for equality, chose to take the high road and ignore the controversy altogether.

Good job, boys. Congrats on your gold!
