It Took A Federal Judge To Allow This Trans Teen To Use The Damn Bathroom

“I am elated to hear that I’ll be able to attend my senior year of high school with my full rights restored," said Virginia student Gavin Grimm.

A federal district court ruled today that trans teen Gavin Grimm can use the boy’s bathroom at Gloucester High School in Virginia.

The school board had initially ordered Grimm to use the women’s room or unisex facilities, but in a lawsuit filed on Grimm’s behalf, the ACLU argued that was a violation of the Constitution and Title IX’s protections against sex discrimination.

An earlier verdict initially invalidated Grimm’s Title IX claim, but an appeals court ruled that the Civil Rights Act does indeed protect the rights of transgender students.

“I am elated to hear that I’ll be able to attend my senior year of high school with my full rights restored,” Grimm said. “After nearly two years of humiliation and intense struggle, equality has finally prevailed. Now hopefully other transgender people will not have to face this type of discrimination.”

The school board hopes the Supreme Court will hear their appeal the ruling.
