October 7th is National Kale Day

The third annual National Kale Day will kick off Oct. 7 in New York with a kale tasting on the Today Show plaza, followed by lunch and a cooking event at two schools in the city.

Sponsors include San Miguel Produce, FujiKale, Simply 7 Snacks, Even Hotels and the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.

National Kale Day founders Drew Ramsey and Jennifer Iserloh, authors of the book “50 Shades of Kale,” will attend a kale lunch with students at a public elementary school and then join Oxnard, Calif.-based San Miguel Produce to launch a “Cooking with Kale” series at Manhattan’s Food & Finance High School, according to a news release.

A kale party will follow. The day’s online events include blogger activity, giveaways and an afternoon Twitter party question and answer session with Ramsey and Iserloh.

The social media hashtag is #kaleday2015.

Whole Foods Market has reported that it buys and sells more kale than all other greens combined. Other retailers have reported triple-digit sales increases, according to the release.

“As growers, it’s exciting to find meaningful ways to connect with consumers and build enthusiasm around a category and drive real sales growth,”

Brian Cook, director of sales and marketing for San Miguel Produce, said in the release. “National Kale Day is proof that consumers are eager to be part of the healthy eating movement.”
