Renee Richards

In 1976, Renee Richards was primed to be in the U.S. Open when judges learned she had been born male. The United States Tennis Association attempted to ban her, citing a women-born-women policy, but Richards filed suit and, in a landmark case, the New York Supreme Court ruled in her favor.

Despite the victory, Richards endured public scrutiny, the loss of family and friends, and brutal discrimination from the tennis world.

“[It] didn’t stop the WTA from trying to Richards her from pro tournaments until she sued, or 25 of the 32 women in the field from withdrawing from the first tournament she played, at age 41. Crowds rooted against her,” ESPN writes. “If Richards turned on a TV at the time, she could’ve found Johnny Carson and Bob Hope snickering on The Tonight Show that Richards was her own “mixed doubles team”

Eventually Richards left tennis and returned to a successful ophthalmology practice in California, but her very public battle blazed a trail for future trans athletes like MMA fighter Fallon Fox and NCAA basketball player Kye Allums.

Road to 270: CNN's electoral college map

From: CNN
Now that Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee, it's time to start looking at general election match-ups between him and the likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Here's the CNN Political Unit's first look at the battleground map of 2016. This is where the state of play begins. Trump could confound some of these assumptions, but we'll need to see polling data, campaign organizing and spending, candidate schedules, and campaign engagement before we can adjust the playing field. And we will do just that as often as the campaign game plans dictate.
Donald Trump has already suggested some of the first opportunities he sees to potentially flip the map in the industrial Midwest. Trump hopes to reawaken the so-called Reagan Democrats who once helped put states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Ohio in the GOP column. Conversely, the Clinton campaign sees significant demographic advantages in traditional battleground states such as Nevada and Colorado and perhaps even in reliably (of late) Republican Arizona.
The battleground map will evolve from now through the fall and just like the rest of this election season, it will be anything but predictable.

Bush 41, 43 Do Not Plan to Endorse Donald Trump

From: ABC News
President George H.W. Bush and his son President George W. Bush have no plans to endorse Donald Trump, their spokespeople told ABC News.

"President Bush does not plan to participate in or comment on the presidential campaign,” the younger Bush's spokesman, Freddy Ford, said.

Jim McGrath, spokesman for the elder Bush, said the 41st president is out of politics.

"At age 91, President Bush is retired from politics," McGrath said in an email. "He naturally did a few things to help Jeb, but those were the 'exceptions that proved the rule.'"

Jeb Bush, former Florida governor and son and brother of the former presidents, left the race in February.

The Texas Tribune was the first to report the news.

This is the first time in the last five election cycles that Bush 41 has not endorsed the GOP nominee.

Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon Starring In New Ryan Murphy Series—As Bette Davis And Joan Crawford!

"Feud" is sure to be a showdown of epic proportions.
From: NewNowNext
To those of you still mourning Jessica Lange’s departure from American Horror Story, dry your tears now. The Emmy-winning actress is confirmed to star in Feud, a new anthology series coming to FX from AHS creator Ryan Murphy.

As the title suggests, the series will focus on famous beefs, with the first season revealing the backstory and backbiting behind What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?

Lange will play Joan Crawford, with Susan Sarandon stepping in as Bette Davis. Alfred Molina, Stanley Tucci, Judy Davis and Dominic Burgess will co-star. It’s like gay Christmas in May!

Feud will mark Lange’s first collaboration with Murphy since Season Four of American Horror Story wrapped back in 2014, but the two have always made magic together—from Constance Langdon to Sister Jude.

She was the Supreme, after all!

A diva-off between her and Sarandon will make some great television—and if there’s anyone who knows how to capitalize on campiness and catiness, it’s Ryan Murphy.

FX has ordered eight episodes of Feud, which is set to premiere sometime next year. Along with Murphy, Brad Pitt will serve as executive producer.

We’ll have our popcorn ready.

The New York Times Declares: Chest Hair Is IN!

Once again, the Times is hot on the trail of a budding new "trend."
From: NewNowNext
The New York Times Style section’s history of noticing trends years after they’ve caught on continues this week, with a brand new piece that claims guys are finally ditching their razors and wax kits in favor of their chest hair.

“For a new generation, the overly groomed body appears to be falling out of favor,” Max Berlinger writes. His research led him to two Los Angeles men embracing this supposed new trend.

“I don’t know if it was my age or becoming comfortable with myself,” said Eric Shoemaker, the 34-year-old PR executive whose furry chest provides a visual backdrop for the piece.

“But the thought of getting waxed — which makes your hair follicles bleed and you get ingrown hairs — you have to ask who you’re doing it for.”

“We’re seeing a return to ’70s fashion,” added Tim Bess, an analyst at the trend forecasting agency the Doneger Group. “The late ’60s and early ’70s were about freedom, the hippie movement, having lots of hair.”

Berlinger writes:

An unkempt body is a perhaps unforeseen corollary of the lumberjack look that has long since peaked in certain Brooklyn circles. Even the brand 2(x)ist, known for its sleekly textured models, has opted to show its underwear on the hairy frame of Nyle DiMarco, a recent winner of “America’s Next Top Model.”

“We’ve seen everything from man-buns to full beards go mainstream in recent seasons, and we want to reflect that rugged, a tad unpolished, yet approachable look,” said 2(x)ist brand manager Tom Speight.

With a brand new trend this hot, there’s no telling how long it’ll take other brands to follow suit!
