Vine Is Shutting Down

Twitter will discontinue the app in the coming months.

 Twitter announced today that it was shuttering Vine, the company’s short-form video app that launched in 2013.

In a post on Medium, Vine broke the news that the app would be discontinued—but the website would be kept online “because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made.”

 Twitter bought Vine in late 2012 and debuted it in January 2013. The six-second loop of videos became a popular format for singing and comedy videos—and created a few viral stars along the way such as Logan Paul and Shawn Mendes.

Vine was never the breakout hit Twitter was hoping for—even with magazine articles about the glamorous life of Vine-lebrities—and eventually it’s co-founders quit and the video feature on Instagram also had a hand in killing the app’s growth.

The Verge reports that “significant layoffs hit Vine today,” but Twitter declined to give details on whether those employees would be offered new jobs within Twitter.
