FBI to Investigate Newly Discovered Hillary Clinton Emails, Director James Comey Says

From: Towleroad
FBI Director James Comey announced on Friday that the Bureau would be examining new email evidence pertaining  to Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State.

Comey sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee saying it had discovered new emails while working on an allegedly unrelated investigation. The intent of investigating these new emails is reportedly to determine whether this crop of electronic correspondence contained any classified material.

NBC News reports:

“In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation … I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation,” he wrote.
In September, Comey defended his agency’s decision to not press criminal charges in the investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email sever. Documents related to the case were released just before the Labor Day weekend and included a summary of Clinton’s July interview with the FBI about her private email server, as well as a detailed investigative summary of the case.
The FBI language in the letter to Congress makes clear that new evidence has been discovered and thus will be reviewed — meaning FBI agents will read these emails. It is unusual for the FBI to tell Congress it is looking over newly discovered evidence in a criminal inquiry that was otherwise closed.
Asked to respond, a top Clinton campaign spokesperson tells NBC News, “No idea.”

Meanwhile, this sums it up.

The stock market took a dive after the news broke.

UPDATING…

Speaker Paul Ryan says Hillary Clinton should no longer receive classified briefings until the probe is concluded.

Trump’s campaign is ecstatic.

Still no word on what “unrelated investigation” the emails were connected with.

Donald Trump hit the campaign trail in Manchester, New Hampshire shortly after the news broke, saying “this is bigger than Watergate.”

Reporters are still waiting for a response from Clinton’s team.

Now questions have emerged if the initial investigation was ever closed.

Now there is a report saying that a “device” was found but did not contain actual emails from Hillary.

The Hill reports that there has been a bipartisan call from lawmakers for Comey to explain his letter:

“Director Comey should give a more complete explanation,” John Weaver, an aide to Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R), said on Twitter. “Too much at stake.” […]
John Cornyn (Texas), the No. 2 Senate Republican, appeared to echo the criticism by retweeting an NBC reporter’s questioning of whether the “public deserve more” and then questioning the timing on his own.

The New York Times now reports that the emails were discovered during an investigation into Anthony Weiner’s ‘sexting’:

Federal law enforcement officials said Friday that the new emails uncovered in the closed investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server were discovered after the F.B.I.seized electronic devices belonging to Huma Abedin, and aide to Mrs. Clinton, and her husband, Anthony Weiner.
