Emma Stone, who is portraying Billie Jean King in the upcoming film Battle of the Sexes, will salute the out tennis legend at Trailblazer Honors, airing June 25 on Logo and VH1.
One of most acclaimed tennis players of all time, King was the first to come out as gay, in 1981. She has also been an outspoken advocate for women in sports, arguing for equal pay for female players and founding the Women’s Tennis Association in 1973.
In 2009, King was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award that can be given to a civilian in the United States.
Two years ago President Obama selected King to be a part of the official US Delegation to the Sochi Winter Olympics and she used the platform to speak out against anti-LGBT laws in Russia and around the world.
Battle of the Sexes, starring Stone and Steve Carrell as King and Bobby Riggs, will hit theaters in 2017.
Other Trailblazer honorees include Harvey Fierstein, Syrian activist Subhi Nahas and The Advocate. The special is part of Logo’s full day of ‘We Are Orlando’ programming, a day of remembrance including LGBT-themed films, documentaries and interviews.
