Connie Kopelov, First Lesbian Legally Married In NYC, Passes Away

From:NewNowNext
Connie Kopelov, whose marriage to Phyllis Siegel in 2011 was the first legal “gay marriage” in New York City, has passed away at age 90.

Siegel, who had already been partners with Kopelov for 23 years before their wedding, confirmed that her partner was suffering from the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

The couple was married by the city clerk on July 24, 2011, which was the same day that a law allowing same-sex couples to marry went into effect, and they were the first through the door of the marriage bureau.

Siegel said that people have been stopping the happy couple on the street to congratulate them ever since.
