Monday night’s TrevorLIVE event was a somber affair after Sunday’s tragic mass shooting. The semi-annual fundraiser for the Trevor Project honored LGBT youth and activists, as well as the victims in Orlando.
The night opened with an emotional rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” sung by The Stonewall Chorus.
Trevor Project director Abbe Land then addressed Orlando, noting how important it was that everyone came out to the event that evening.
“Our youth needs to know we are here for them. We are here, heads held high and we are being strong,” said Land. “We have to be warriors. We have to get the guns off the streets. We have to be warriors for our youth and their future.”
Among the honorees was Marcus Mabry, who accepted the 20/20 Visionary Award on behalf of Twitter. The former New York Times editor thanked RuPaul for inspiring the social media company to choose the hashtag #LoveIsLove for LGBT Pride Month.

Deborah Cox brought the house down with an emotional cover of Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love Of All.”
Alyssa Milano, Andrew Rannells and Judith Light were among some of the stars who spoke at the event.
Light, a longtime ally to the LGBT community, thanked the audience for still attending, despite the devastating news out of Florida. “I find it incredibly encouraging and inspiring, so thank you all for that.”
Harvey Fierstein was there to present the Trevor Hero Award to longtime Trevor supporters Jordan Roth and Richie Jackson. In his speech, Fierrstein addressed Orlando, and criticized Republican candidate Donald Trump’s glib reaction to the tragedy.
“’Make America Great Again?’ F*ck you, Trump,” the Kinky Boots co-creator said to a cheering crowd.

He also stressed how important The Trevor Project is to struggling LGBT youth.

The ceremony also featured Broadway star Billy Porter singing “I’ve Gotta Be Me” and closed with a rousing number performed by Beautiful’s Jarrod Spector and Doctor Zhivago’s Kelli Barrett.
