Aaron Schock Is Back On Capitol Hill

A Justice Department investigation into the former Congressman's lavish spending is still ongoing.

Former Illinois Rep. Aaron Schock returned to the Capitol this week for the first time since he resigned amid a Justice Department investigation into his spending habits.

Former House members retain floor privileges indefinitely, and Schock was there to address a joint session of Congress in support of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Capitol Hill.

The investigation into Schock’s finances during his time as a U.S. Representative is still ongoing. It began in 2015 after a Washington Post reporter gained access to Schock’s Congressional office and noted the extravagant decor, which led to a series of media inquiries about his lavish spending habits and the possibility he may have used tax dollars to access private jets for personal trips and shower his staff with gifts like Katy Perry concert tickets.

The scandal garnered national media attention for Schock, who had dominated gay media headlines the year before when former CBS journalist Itay Hod claimed to have knowledge that Schock is gay.

Asked for comment on the inquiry, Schock told the Peoria Journal Star, “I can’t say anything other than that I don’t know anything more than you know.”

Schock has never formally responded to his gay rumors but he did manage to respond to allegations about his spending last February with a Taylor Swift lyric, when he told Jeff Zeleny of ABC News: “As Taylor Swift said, ’haters are gonna hate.’”

Schock now reportedly lives in southern California and wouldn’t elaborate on what he’s up to beyond working for a firm that “does large hospitality projects” and spending time with his 16 nieces and nephews.

“They’ve seen me more in the last year than in the last six years combined — and that’s a good thing,” he said.
