President Enrique Peña Nieto Calls For Nationwide Marriage Equality In Mexico

The president is calling for the constitution to be revised to allow for same-sex marriage.

 Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced he wants to reform the country’s constitution to extend marriage to same-sex couples.

“This way, equal marriage will be clear in our constitution,” Peña Nieto said yesterday at an International Day Against Homophobia event.

Currently, there is great inconsistency among the Mexico’s 31 states, which each have autonomy on the issue: Currently, same-sex marriage is only legal in Chihuahua, Coahuila, Jalisco, Nayarit, Quintana Roo and Sonora.

“There is no possibility for a single ruling from the highest court that will overturn same-sex marriage bans nationwide.,” writes Rex Wockner. “Even the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) will have to go state-by-state.”

Still, the president’s statement demonstrates solidarity with Mexico’s LGBT community
