 “The Teahouse of the August Moon” (1956) is a satire set in post-World War II Japan that follows the U.S. military’s attempt to Americanize Japan. 

Character’s Background
 Sakini is a local who becomes an interpreter for the U.S. military. He is Japanese. 

Actor’s Background
Marlon Brando is not Japanese or of Asian descent. He is of mixed-European descent and wore full yellowface for the role. Brando also portrayed real-life Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata in “Viva Zapata!” (1952) despite not being Latino. He was nominated for an Academy Award for the role.
