The hill of Montmarte was once covered with windmills. Gypsum otherwise known as 'plaster of Paris' was quarried here, and carted to the city . That's why the Sacre Coeur, as well as a lot of buildings in Paris are white. Montmartre's locals used to say “There's more of Montmartre in Paris than there is of Paris in Montmartre".
