Don Gino Flaim blamed the church's sex-abuse crisis on "children who seek affection.

A Catholic priest said he could “understand pedophilia” in a live interview on Italian television, but said he was “not sure” about homosexuality.

Clearly not done burying himself, Don Gino Flaim of Trento in northern Italy went on to blame the young victims of molesting clergy.

“Unfortunately there are children who seek affection because they don’t receive it at home, and I understand that some priests can give up,” Flaim told LA7.

“Pedophilia is a sin, and like all sins has to accepted, also.” Homosexuality, he differentiated “is a disease.”

Flaim, who has been suspended from his post as the archdiocese investigates, said later his opinions “do not represent the positions of Trento archdiocese and the general sentiment of the parish.

At the same time, the Vatican is holding a synod on the family, with bishops emphasizing the need for open discussion on divorce and LGBT people.

“There must be an end to exclusionary language and a strong emphasis on embracing reality as it is; we should not be afraid,” said The Rev. Thomas Rosica of the Vatican press office.

Is it any wonder many are finding it hard to believe the Vatican given the rhetoric of priests like Flaim?
