Bette Midler To Star In Film Adaptation Of James St. James’ “Freak Show”

Midler is set to play the cross-dressing teen protagonist's mother.

 Bette Midler has been tapped to star in the film adaptation of James St. James best-seller Freak Show.

The film will be producer and directed by Trudie Styler, wife of Sting, and will star AnnaSophia Robb (The Carrie Diaries), Ian Nelson and Lorraine Toussaint (Orange is the New Black).

Variety is reporting that filming could begin as early as later this month.

Originally published in 2007, the book was nominated for the Lambda Literary Award for LGBT Children’s/Young Adult and the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Men’s Debut Fiction.


It tells the story of cross-dressing teen Billy Bloom who’s the newest student at an ultra-conservative high school. Unfazed by the relentless torment of his peers, Billy sensibly decides to run for Homecoming Queen

Midler is set to play Billy’s mother, Muv.
