Andrew Rannells Stepping In for Jonathan Groff In Broadway’s “Hamilton”

Groff is leaving the show to shoot the "Looking" movie.

Andrew Rannells is stepping into another Broadway hit this month, when he fills in for Jonathan Groff in the acclaimed musical Hamilton.

Groff, who stars in the Lin-Manuel Miranda production as King George, is taking a leave of absence from October 27 through November 29 for to shoot the Looking film. (Guess that’s actually happening!)

Groff will return to the production on December 1, producers said in a statement.

Rannells received a Tony nomination for his performance as Elder Price in The Book of Mormon, and most recently took the lead role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. (A show Groff, IMHO, would have been great for.)

Inspired by Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, Hamilton follows the scrappy young immigrant (played by Miranda), the bastard son of a Scottish immigrant who rose to become Washington’s right-hand man and one of our founding fathers.

Along with Hamilton and the King, the show features appearances by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, as well as Hamilton’s lifelong frenemy, Aaron Burr.

Hmm, we wonder if there will be a crush of celebrities trying to get backstage to see Rannells, too.
