The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis met privately with Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who has refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
“I cannot not deny the meeting took place but I have no comments to add,” Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said on Wednesday.
Davis’ attorney, Matt Staver, initially told CBS News yesterday about the meeting, though neither side would directly confirm it happened until now.
“I never thought I would meet the Pope,” Davis said in a statement. “Who am I to have this rare opportunity? I am just a County Clerk who loves Jesus and desires with all my heart to serve him.”
The meeting occurred last Thursday, the same day Francis addressed Congress. Davis was in Washington to receive an award at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit the next day.
“Just knowing the Pope is on track with what we’re doing, and agreeing, you know, kind of validates everything,” Davis told ABC News. “I’ve weighed the cost, and I’m prepared to do whatever it takes.”
ABC reports the meeting was the Vatican’s idea, and that officials reached out to Davis several weeks ago. She called the encounter “very humbling.”
“I put my hand out, and he grabbed it, and I hugged him, and he hugged me.”
Staver told CBS News Pope Francis asked her to pray for him, and gave Davis rosaries that he had blessed. Also in attendance was Kim’s second husband, Joe Davis, who is also her fourth and current spouse.
Davis, who is an Apostolic Christian, said she will give the beads to her parents, who are Catholic.
