Peter Allen is remembered not only for his incredible musical career—he gave us hits like “Don’t Cry Out Loud” and “I Go to Rio,” and won a Grammy for his work on Olivia Newton John’s “I Honestly Love You”—but also for his tumultuous marriage to Liza Minelli.
Both are covered extensively in a new made-for-TV movie, Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door, which aired Down Under on Sunday night.

Americans saw Allen’s life unfold in the acclaimed Broadway musical The Boy From Oz, starring Hugh Jackman, but this two-part biopic digs deeper—exploring his traumatic childhood and rise to fame, his seven-year marriage to Minnelli and alleged relationship with Judy Garland’s husband Mark Herron.

Allen and Minnelli’s marriage ended in 1974, when he came out as a gay man. He and his longtime partner, Gregory Connell, both succumbed to AIDS-related illness—Allen in 1984 at age 48.

Joel Jackson plays the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, with Rebecca Gibney as Allen’s mother, Marion Woolnough, Sigrid Thornton as Garland and Sara West as Minnelli.
