Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, sat down with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly for a cable news exclusive interview on Wednesday night.
Kelly began by asking Davis whether she saw herself as a heroine or a villain, the county clerk responded that it “depends on if you love God or not, which side I’m on.”
“It has never been a gay or lesbian issue for me,” Davis insisted. “It has been about upholding the word of God and how God defined marriage from the very beginning of time.”
Megyn then pointed out that Davis’ critics say she’s been married four times, divorced three times, had an affair while married and had children out of wedlock.
“They look at you and say, ‘Who are you to judge others?’ To them you say what?” Megyn asked.
Davis said she hasn’t judged anyone, she has simply given her life to Christ and has been redeemed by Christ. She added all those who accuse her of hatred or bigotry simply do not know her.
“Everyone has a soul,” Davis said. “And that’s what, as Christians, we’re bound to love and to reach for.”
Kelly asked Davis why she didn’t just resign if she is unable to perform her job as required. “If I resign I lose my voice,” she answered. “Why should I have to quit a job that I love and that I’m good at?”
Davis argued that she deserves a special accommodation to be made for her faith, to which Kelly responded by asking her how she would feel if accommodations then had to be made for all sorts of people from different faiths. Davis dodged the question, saying: “You’re not talking about a racial issue,” adding, “I’m just talking about marriage in general.”
Later, Kelly asked Davis if she would issue marriage licenses to her own children if they turned out to be gay. “I wouldn’t allow them a marriage license. No way,” she said. “I would love them because I love all people, but I would not write them a marriage license.”
