Pope Francis reportedly met Davis in DC, and gave her a rosary he blessed himself.

Kim Davis met with Pope Francis last week during his visit to the U.S., Davis’ attorney, Mat Staver, told CBS News.

According to Staver, the Pope met Davis, the Kentucky clerk who went to jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, briefly on Thursday, September 24, at the Vatican Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Staver said Pope Francis gave Davis and her husband rosaries he had blessed, and asked her to pray for him. Davis, in return, asked the Pope to pray for her.

The Pope told Davis to stay strong, Staver said.

CBS News is reportedly waiting for confirmation from the Vatican, which Staver says is in possessions of photos of the two together.

On his flight home from America, Francis was asked about Davis’ case.

Admitting he didn’t know the specifics of the case, but insisted conscientious objection was a basic human right.

“It is a right. And if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right,” Francis said.

If Francis did meet with Davis, it would be frustrating to those hoping he’d extend an olive branch to the LGBT community.

Of course Staver isn’t the most reliable source: He once claimed Davis has received death threats from The View.

“They called her a monster on national television. One of them said that someone ought to go kill her,” he declared. “This is on a major network!”

Staver is also the founder of the Liberty Counsel, which exists pretty much solely to fight against LGBT equality. He’s filed suits against Obamacare and to remove protest-free buffer zones outside abortion clinics.

Here are Mat Staver’s top five opinions, courtesy of HRC.

1. He said LGBT young people have “confusion” because of “the likes of a Jerry Sandusky abuser,” and need to cured by reparative therapy.

2. Staver compared marriage equality to slavery and forced sterilization.

3. Liberty Counsel claims “radical homosexual anarchist agenda” are to blame for LGBT hate crimes protections: “Pedophiles find refuge in this so-called hate crimes bill, while veterans and grandmas are left to fend for themselves.”

4. According to Staver, prohibiting employers from discriminating against an LGBT employees is forcing them to “abandon the biblical and traditional values.”

5. Liberty Counsel compared being gay or trans to being a drug addict: “Laws that single out those who want to engage in a harmful behavior, like drug laws that discriminate against heroin users, are not unlawful discrimination but rather compassionate public policy.”
