Argentina has lifted its ban on gay men donating blood, deciding to instead assess whose blood to take based on individual risk rather than sexual orientation.
Health Minister Daniel Gollán spoke out about the new ruling, saying that it was “scientifically and technically accurate.”
He also said Argentina can “move toward a national blood system that is safe, caring and inclusive” thanks to the new policy.
Argentina now joins countries like Italy, Spain and Portugal in assessing based on individual risk.
Unfortunately, the United States, as well as the UK, Canada, and Australia, have not yet changed their existing discriminatory policy.
They all either ban any man who has ever had sex with another man from donating blood, or tell them they must be celibate for between one and five years.
