Our next novel from Kyle Michel Sullivan is much darker than last, The Lyon's Den. While reading Rape in Holding Cell 6, I envisioned a hardcore version of Law and Order SVU. It's the true definition of a page turner.
Synopsis
When Antony met Collier, his life became perfect...until "Collie" was wrongfully arrested and brutally murdered in the city's jail, sending Antony's world into chaos. Then a chance comment led him to believe Collie's death was not a "tragic incident that no one have been prevented," but was actually part of a vicious conspiracy. Antony set out to learn the truth, putting himself on a collision course with a shadowy group of people who would stop at nothing to protect themselves...even if it meant killing not only him but anyone else they felt was a threat -- including Jake, another man touched by the conspiracy...but who was still willing to back Antony up and offer him a chance at a new life.
Kyle was kind enough to give us a glimpse into the inspiration for his novel...
This idea came about because in California, not long before I left, some prison guards were put on trial for deliberately setting up the rape of a prisoner. They got off, of course; cops can get away with murder if they play it right and get a DA who wants to protect them. Look at the 4 cops who beat the hell out of Rodney King in LA, so long ago; the DA pretty much deliberately "bungled" their prosecution of the case. Of course, they didn't expect the city to wind up in riots with dozens dead. Big shock, I'm sure.
That was 22 years ago, and nothing's changed. If anything, they've gotten to be worse. Cops lie with impunity, arrest people on trumped up charges, and the DAs prosecute people based on the cop's word while ignoring evidence to the contrary. The Department of Justice actually drove a young man named Aaron Swartz to suicide by threatening to prosecute him for doing something he had the right to do -- check out information from a library he had access to. His crime? He shared that information.
The latest example is Cecily McMillan who was part of the Occupy movement and was attacked by a cop. Despite showing she had bruises from what he did and he had nothing in the way of injuries, she was put on trial for second degree assault, the prosecution smeared her with lies and the judge refused to let the jury see any evidence that was beneficial to the defense, so she was found guilty. She faced 7 years in prison but was just sentenced to 3 months and 5 years probation. An appeal has been filed, but considering how the system of justice in America's become corrupted by right wing fear-mongers, I doubt anything will come of it.
Rant over, because it was years ago that I thought about doing something to snipe at the non-justice of America's justice system...only I took it to the extreme and had fun doing it. Throwing in lots of sex, twists and turns, what I think is a solid romance, and punishment for the guilty and guilty-ish. Initially this was published as two books but that was silly. So I got the rights back, slapped 'em together and put them out, myself.
