Huge Fire In Provincetown Devastates Commercial Street

The LGBT mecca was packed for the Memorial Day holiday weekend

A three-alarm fire broke out in downtown Provincetown early Saturday evening, destroying a beloved local business.

Cape Wide News reports that the fire started at The Red Shack in busy Lopes Square on Commercial Street near MacMillan Wharf. The flames severely damaged the restaurant, as well as adjoining restaurants Surf Club and Tatiana’s.

Although there were apartments on the building’s second floor, everyone was safely evacuated, and only one person was treated at the scene for burns.

With the popular gay vacation spot particularly crowded for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, firefighters worked hard to get the fire under control within two hours. They used newly acquired equipment called a “blitz gun,” which kept the fire from spreading to other neighboring buildings like the Lobster Pot restaurant. No firefighter injuries were reported.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but Cape Cod Times reports that it is believed to have originated in Red Shack’s ventilation system.
