June 19th is Flitch of Bacon Day

Although you may not be familiar with "Flitch Day," you have probably heard the phrase "bring home the bacon." That phrase originated with Flitch Day, which is celebrated each year on July 19.

In 1104, a married couple in England impressed the Prior of Little Dunmow with their devotion to one another. They were so convincing and inspiring that the Prior awarded them a flitch of bacon (which is a side of bacon).

That episode turned into an annual event where married couples would go before a jury to convince them of their fidelity. If they succeeded, they were awarded a flitch.

The Flitch tradition is still celebrated every four years in Great Dunmow, Essex, England
