Conchita Wurst Wins Eurovision 2014
Despite protests in eastern Europe before Eurovision 2014, bearded drag queen Conchita Wurst not only competed in the celebrated singing contest but won with her ballad "Rise Like a Phoenix." The 25-year-old Austrian performer, aka Thomas Neuwirth, was both emotional and poignant when she accepted the prize in May. "This is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom,"she said. Wurst also spoke to reporters after her victory, sharing that she hopes LGBT people everywhere continue to gain strength in their battles for rights.
