A Spokane coffee house has a new tactic to keep Starbucks at bay: shirtless male baristas. Hot Cup of Joe just opened on North Ash Street, but already its pulling in crowds eager to be waited on by servers with visible six-packs.
Chris Mullins, Joe’s 28-year-old owner, came up with the idea after the rise of bikini coffee shops in the area. “I’ve been in the adult entertainment industry for a few years, and I have a lot of friends who are bikini baristas,” said Mullins, a former stripper. “Women have been screaming for something like this, especially with the recent Hollywood Magic Mikecraze.”
Mullins was worried his shtick would turn off male customers, and actually considered giving men a $1 discount on coffee. Clearly Spokane’s gay community needs to make its presence known.
“What we’re doing is just a classier, sexier Hanes commercial in real life. We’re not going to be able to please everybody,” Mullins says. “If people don’t want to sit here and see some classy guys in classy outfits that just happened to be ripped and hot and making coffees, then they can go get coffee where that’s not going on.”
Just be careful with all those scalding hot liquids splashing around, Joe.
