Bad postcard of the week:

No victors to be hailed in this University of Michigan dining spot
From:  The Grand Rapids Press
I believe the League Cafeteria today is known as Beanster's Cafe
and probably has more people sitting in it.
Could it be the food?

Today’s bad postcard takes us to proud Ann Arbor and the cafeteria in the Michigan League Building -- a very empty cafeteria.

It’s a glorious chrome card from the 1960s, and there is nary a victor-hailing Wolverine in sight. That places this right in our favored “ghost town” genre of bad postcards.

The back reads: “The League Cafeteria, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Offering fine food in a relaxed dining atmosphere to students, staff, alumni and visitors. Centrally located on campus in the University of Michigan League Building.

But why is the League Cafeteria empty? Given that it’s the University of Michigan, I’m sure that the cafeteria is the Tavern on the Green of the Midwest and the meals are wonderful.

Rather than the usual maize and blue, we see teal. Lots of teal. And a planter that might or might not contain real plants. You can tell by the way the card is framed that the photographer really, really wanted to get the planter in the shot. But do we really want U of M students growing plants so close to the Diag?

Must have been proud of the recessed lighting and ceiling tiles, too.

Why so empty? Maybe the photo was probably snapped after hours. Perhaps this is a meeting of the RichRod Fan Club. Or it’s the victory party after eight of the last 10 games against The Ohio State University.

Then again, why eat at a cafeteria when my favorite A-squared food spot -- Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger -- is not too far away?

Now, don’t get too excited, Sparty. As a New Yorker who graduated from the University of Missouri, I’m not taking sides in your rivalry. Your time is coming.
