1940's Gay Beefcake Magazines

In the 1940s Beefcake magazines followed the trend of the 1930s in being Physique culture magazines. They featured articles on bodybuilding, pictures of bodybuilders and contests and ads for bodybuilding products. However, the covers of many issues of the magazines were blatantly homoerotic. Many covers had obviously nude men with bikinis painted over the photos in early attempts at photoshoping, as it was still illegal at this time to have naked men on the covers of magazines. Over time some magazines would try to get away from seemingly too homosexually charged and place women on the cover with the men, or sometimes just pin-up girls themselves.
